Film Hype #280.

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing.

Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, The Imitation Game follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.

PASSENGERS (Morten Tyldum, 2016)

Finally caught this over the New Year’s weekend. I initially thought the movie was a bit of mess storytelling-wise and kind of middle of the road as far as entertainment value. But the more I have thought about it the past few days, the less I like Passengers.

*SPOILERS*
And it all boils down to that moment in the plot where Jim (Chris Pratt) essentially “kidnaps” Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) and dooms her to death with him on the ship. It’s supposed come off as a big moral dilemma for Jim. Instead, it’s just him being selfish and willing to negate Aurora’s own plans for her future because he’s lonely. Also troublesome is Aurora’s willingness (eventually) to still love Jim after she finds out what he has done. It’s all very Stockholm syndrome and taints everything that comes after it … especially the “we lived the rest of our lives in happiness” ending.
2/5
