Small-screen stars turned out for TV’s biggest night as the 2016 Emmy Awards took over the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18. Jimmy Kimmel returned to host the 68th annual show for the second time since 2012. This year, many of his zingers centered on the election, Maggie Smith’s absence and the night’s heavy hitters: Game of ThronesandThe People v. O.J. Simpson. Kimmel himself became the butt of the joke when longtime frenemy Matt Damon made a cameo on stage to mock his losing out to John Oliver for Variety Talk Series.
As expected, HBO reigned supreme again with the network claiming 22 wins, a record 12 of which went to Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, the critically-acclaimed People v. O.J. Simpson scored 9 golden statues; Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance all took home awards in their respective acting categories.
On the comedy front, Julia Louis-Dreyfus made Emmy history with her fifth consecutive win for Veep – the most ever in that category. It was the year of firsts for Rami Malek and Tatiana Maslany, who each won their first Emmy for Mr. RobotandOrphan Black, respectively.
