I love that Arthur’s first full sentence to Merlin was “do I know you?” Regardless of the circumstances of which the question was asked during, there’s something hauntingly and fatefully beautiful about those words being the first someone would speak to their soulmate.
And I love this because it implies they have met before. Arthur reacted this way when he saw Merlin in an alter ego, canonically implying that ourMerlin is an alter ego himself. Arthur’s the Once and Future King- who’s to say the “Once” hadn’t already happened by the time canon rolled around? And Arthur’s soul recognizes the other half of its coin, as it has before and as it will again
This is made so much more potent by the fact that reincarnation is a canon belief in BBC Merlin with the existence of statements like “If I need a servant in the next life”, “Unless you act quickly, Emrys, even you cannot alter the never-ending circle of Arthur’s fate”, “You are known, Arthur. you have always been known”, and how Arthur is destined to rise again.
