You know, I think the reason I’m drawn to filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and Hayao Miyazaki and Lana Wachowski is that they tell their stories with a sort of earnest sincerity that has become rare in modern filmmaking. Everybody’s got to be cool and cynical and “above” traditional storytelling devices. They have to shock you no matter how little sense it makes. You’re foolish to become emotionally attached to characters and to have hopes and expectations for their story.
Anyway, I’m still in my feelings about Matrix Resurrections and how it embraced the transcending power of the love and care people have for each other. And I’m really grateful that Lana Wachowski hasn’t bought in to the spitefulness that’s so popular right now. Cynical jerks will definitely troll hard, but that’s about their own failings, not the movie’s. Sincerity is a beautiful thing.
