ネッシー目撃談は6世紀頃から始まったと伝えられているが、近年のように世間を賑わすようになったのはマスメディアが発達してからだ。さらに、1930年代、ネス湖周辺の道路が整備されてからは目撃談が頻出するようになる。1933年８月には、アーサー・グラントという人物が、深夜、北東海岸近くをオートバイで走っていた時、あわや怪物と衝突しそうになったというニュースが広まった。その怪物は、長い首の先に小さな頭がついていたという。
怪物はグラントを見ると道路を横切り湖に逃れたというが、この話はグラント氏の友人が流したデマだとされる。

June 8th: In 1877, workers along Monument Point along Great Salt Lake in Kelton, Utah saw a large creature thrashing about in the water, causing them to run away. When they returned, they discovered their tents flattened and large tracks around their campsite.
1877年6月、米ユタ州にあるソルトレーク湖で、何か大きな生物が水の中で動いているのをキャンプ場にいた労働者が目撃した。いったん逃げ出した彼らが湖畔に戻ると、彼らのテントはペシャンコになり、周辺に巨大な足跡らしきものが残っていたという。
