The pitter-patter from the bathroom douses you in fear, each drizzle of the spray against the tile causing your pulse to rush. You can’t pinpoint how long he’s dwelled in there.
His skin has to be melting by now. It feels like an hour, maybe less. Maybe.
Your mind is so fraught with terror, your sanity unzipping at the seams, that the clock hung on the opposite side of your bedroom keeps blurring in your vision.

You loved attention, thrived on it, ever since you were little. Being the daughter of one of the richest men in the world did that to you. But ever since that day when your personal security detail was attacked and Nick had been tasked with bringing you to this safe house, there had been no contact with the outside world. The signal was shoddy and you thanked your stars that the cable seemed to work otherwise you would have gone stir crazy.
Nick sat across from you, reading his book, acting disinterested as always. It drove you mad, having an attractive man not notice you. He was almost indifferent to you.
You let out a wistful sigh and crossed your legs, your dress riding up to reveal more of your thigh. Nothing. He didn’t even glance up.
With a huff, you shot up from your seat and headed to the kitchen. It was always well stocked, a fresh delivery coming every Tuesday like clockwork. The two men who brought by the food and supplies never stayed long and you weren’t allowed to meet them. It didn’t stop you from spying from your room whenever they came. The tall blond was handsome but the brunette with a metal arm always caught your eye. Mainly because he bore a striking resemblance to Nick.
You never asked of course. You doubt he’d tell you anything anyways.
Grabbing leftovers from the fridge, you plopped down at the island and began to eat. Your eyes wandered to the small bar that Nick had set up in the butler’s pantry. Various decanters decorated the marble surface, each filled with varying hues of liquid.
A devious thought crossed your mind and you put down your fork, quietly slipping off your stool. Nick didn’t even stir as you quickly prepared two drinks the way he usually did later in the evening. On barely heard footsteps, you made your way to his plush leather armchair and placed the glass on the table next to him, you clinked your glass to his.
Summary: Gaining information for your country is the path you’ve chosen. Nick Fowler is the one bump in the road.

Nick almost tripped over his own feet when Tomás asked him the question. Tomás had been his recreation hour guard for over a year and had listened to him talk about you over and over in English. Nick assumed that his guard only spoke Spanish at the beginning, so he just rambled on, needing to get it out in order to hold on to whatever sanity he had left.
Nick had noticed however, that the small reactions to what he was saying increased, the eye movements, a twitch of the mouth when he said something funny, signs that Tomás may have been beginning to understand English. But he never spoke up, just walked alongside Nick, gun drawn, at the ready to shoot him dead if he tried anything.
Nick smiled at the idea that he wasn’t completely alone in this after all. He replied in English, to further Tomás’ education.
“Well, if she were here, she could probably answer that question better than I could. Of all the information I’ve gathered over the years, I don’t know why she chose me. I am quite unloveable.”
Nick continued walking and talking in English while Tomás deciphered what he said, and listened eagerly for any clues into this great historia de amor.
Even at the age of 26, you could tell that he would be an asshole for life. He was nice to look at, but damn, was he annoying.

And the animosity between them…it was everything! I could feel the tension in my throat.
“You want me to take control? Yeah. You’re a control freak. Always the best at everything and you can’t let me top you in public…”

OMG! That last part! The twist! A player gets played…yes! My mind is blown. That was excellent.
I also enjoyed the building with the characters, it gave the story more life. Her predicting who would wash out with Mace was super fun lol. So much work was put in into making this realistic, I adored the details about her training.
I can’t get over how incredible her dynamic with Nick was; I felt like I was watching a movie. Amazing.
