Austin Night Market, September 27-28th: Asian-style night market! I’ll have nature/Austin/Asian-inspired illustrations, and am planning to have a station where you can #screenprint your own limited edition art. :) @austinnightmarket

Day 3 of the Halal Food Tour I decided to follow where my taste buds led me.
Foodchella Day 3:
Snack: Tequenones
Price: $16.95
Rating: 8/10
Verdict: These were kinda like your jumbo sized mozzarella sticks. Super cheesy and full of flavour. The sauce that came with it was amazing. I only wish they gave a little more sauce cause it wasn’t enough for those monster sized cheese sticks. I ended up eating one and was full off that. I found them to be a tad bit overpriced 3 for $15 but overall they tasted great!
Main: Soft Shell Crab
Price: $22.60
Rating: 7/10
Verdict: At first I was sorta skeptical about this cause I’ve only ever seen ppl on Tik Tok eating a whole ass crab. I was curious and so decided to go with it, even though most ppl were getting the Birria tacos from this truck. Honestly it was pretty good, not too fishy which was great. Also, I didn’t get sick after… cause trusting seafood from a food truck is a big risk to take, especially on a hot day. It was crispy but not crunchy like I thought it would be. The shell’s texture was almost like a shrimp’s tail. I wish they put more tartar sauce and coleslaw cause it was kinda dry and all I could really taste was the crab and bun. It was pretty big and filling but lacked some flavour and was a wee bit oily. But overall it wasn’t so bad.
Drink: Lychee Cactus Pear Juice
Price: $8.48
Rating: 10/10
Verdict: This drink was so frikken good! Would have been even better in a glass full of ice. But the flavours really hit the spot! I could drink this on a daily and never grow tired of it. I wish they gave more cause I chugged it down in a few seconds.
Dessert: Churros
Price: $6.78
Rating: 6/10
Verdict: They were delicious but super small and definitely not worth the price. For 6 bucks I was expecting like 3 big churros with some filling.

Day 2 of the Halal Food Tour I decided to try some popular options.
Foodchella Day 2:
Snack: Loaded TOT-Cho’s
Price: $19.20
Rating: 2/10
Verdict: I found this to be wayyy too overpriced for something that is considered to be a side dish. The sauces were alright but had a weird aftertaste. I gave my leftovers to my family and they said it tasted like vomit. Definitely not worth it in my honest opinion.
Main: Toro Arepa
Price: $16.95
Rating: 9/10
Verdict: This was by far the best thing I’ve had at the Halal Food Tour! My friend also agrees. The corn pancake with the cheese itself was soo good, the grilled meat was so juicy and tender. Also, the plantain complimented the smokiness of the meat and added a nice texture. I only wished it had more sauce and wasn’t so expensive otherwise I probably would have given it a 10/10. Definitely recommend!
Drink: Sugarcane Juice
Price: $7.91
Rating: 4/10
Verdict: The flavour was good and I liked how they make it fresh right in front of you. However, I didn’t like how it was overpriced and they don’t give you much. Also, it wasn’t as cold and refreshing as I’d hoped. Especially, since it was such a hot day.
Dessert: Halo Halo
Price: $10.17
Rating: 10/10
Verdict: It was delicious and they give you quite a bit. This was my second time trying Halo Halo, I’ve had it at Grand Bend before. This version was way better in my opinion. The ube ice cream was so smooth and creamy and the jello, condensed milk, and beans added good flavours and textures and complimented the dessert well. Also, the price wasn’t so bad! This is def a must-try, especially if you like falooda.

Night Market+ Song
Location: West Hollywood, California
It feels funny to venture beyond the densely packed neighborhood of Thai Town in search of the best Tom Yum Los Angeles has to offer, but one trip to Night Market + Song and you will be so far transported, you won’t care what your coordinates may be. Tom Yum, the classic brothy soup, is quite literally a soup and salad mash-up. The Thai word “Tom” means to boil, while “yam” refers to a Thai spicy and sour salad. This the Thai take on hot and sour soup, characterized by its generous use of fresh lime juice, lemongrass, makrut lime leaves and galangal, a Southeast Asian root most reminiscent of ginger.
Too often, Tom Yum made in America is prepared with more sugar than it needs, making it syrupy over tart, but not at West Hollywood’s Night Market + Song. Their take on the classic is delicate, fragrant and well-positioned to outshine your mother’s chicken soup on any winter day. The setting does well to round-out the experience too. The kitschy interior plays off the aesthetic of Thailand’s hawker markets, while the food mostly hails from the North of the country where the food is a little less four-alarm fire spicy, and features tons of veggies, pork and the beloved larb (a minced meat salad).
