“I can manage.”
Noelani and Pam stare at Cliff, seriously contemplating his words.
“What?”
“Are you reallysure you’re up to watching the kids on your own?” Lani asks gently, concern evident in her warm eyes.
“Of course,” Cliff states, and maybe he straightens his shoulders just the slightest to prove his point.
Pam, on the other hand, does not seem convinced. “Huh.” Her lips curl in a smirk. “And where are the kids now?”
“Waiting at my front door while I get your permission,” he states, but he sees the amusement in their eyes when they look behind him. He turns around and looks toward his house, where four young kids should have been sitting on the front step, and finds it empty. “Not again,” he groans while Pam and Lani chuckle.
“Don’t worry,” Lani eases his worries, “I saw Lizzie point toward the playground. They haven’t gone far.”
Nervous energy flowed through Noelani’s veins as Pam hovered inches away from her face, applying Noelani’s eyeshadow in hues of pink, purple, and blue because today was all about being proud of who they were. But that didn’t stop Noelani from feeling anxious about it. She’d never celebrated Pride before and she felt very out of her element, but at least Pam was here to be her guide.
“There.” Pam leaned back and took in her work with a wide grin. “You look stunning,” she said and leaned in to press a quick kiss to Noelani’s lips, “so stop worrying so much, Lani.”
“I’m trying,” Noelani mumbled, “but…” But being unapologetically out and proud–even for a brief amount of time–was terrifying.
“I get it,” Pam began as she draped the bisexual flag over Noelani’s shoulders, “but you’ll see when we get there that you’ll have nothing to worry about. It’ll be amazing. Promise.”
Noelani felt oddly safe with the flag wrapped around her like a cape. “Okay,” she whispered, suddenly feeling invincible with Pam’s hand in her own and letting Pam lead the way. “Let’s go.”
