L.S. Lowry, The Pond, 1950, oil on canvas.

The Pond’ is an impressive industrial landscape containing many features typical of Lowry’s work; smoking chimneys, terraced houses and on the right, in the middle distance, the Stockport Viaduct. The scene is brought to life by his so called ‘matchstick’ people who swarm like ants through the city’s streets and open spaces. 'This is a composite picture built up from a blank canvas. I hadn’t the slightest idea of what I was going to put in the canvas when I started the picture but it eventually came out as you see it. This is the way I like working best’. Lowry considered this to be his finest industrial landscape.

Alnwick Castle

My frank review: I found this castle supremely disappointing. I thought it was lacking in historical information throughout and that some of the information that was presented was missing proper context. The Percys no doubt make a lot of money off of the pop culture connections (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey), and that is the true draw to the site. It was also bizarre to visit a castle that is still inhabited.

Alnwick Gardens

Various photos throughout the gardens. It was a lush summer day with buzzing bees and endless blooms. I was supremely impressed with the gardens and highly recommend a visit. We took the train to Alnmouth from York then hopped on the short bus ride to Alnwick to visit the gardens and the castle.

The rose garden in July is a feast for the senses. The breeze brings wafts of sweet floral scents and roses of all colours are busting in full bloom.

Alnwick Gardens - The Poison Garden

This garden is accessible by guided tour only, as it houses only poisonous plants, including some Class B drugs. Interestingly, many of the plants are common household plants such as nettles, poppies, rhubarb, and laurel.

i want u guys to know that the university of sussex is constantly graffiti’d with among us crewmates and that the university keep desperately trying to clean it off but some hero with chalk keeps going back for more. the university sign has a permanent stain on the ‘sus’ of sussex

in case you don’t believe me here is photographic evidence

this is an entirely serious institution

The thing is

Essex = east sex

Sussex = south sex

Middlesex = still recognisable in modern English

Wessex = west sex, currently composed of Wiltshire/Somerset/Dorset etc

Someone explain the lack of north sex (Nosex)

It’s cold and wet a lot of the time so folk want to keep their cardigans on.
