#not a cult

LIVE

I don’t believe I have to keep saying this about my hobbies.

Knitting is not a cult. Ravelry is not a cult. There’s no conspiracy, and no shady group of evil knitters trying to ruin your pastime, and calling you out on your bigotry is not the same as trying to indoctrinate you. We’re just trying to get on with our knitting, same as you. If someone calls you out for being a butt and a group of people unfollow you, it’s not because they’re following the wills of their leaders, it’s because they think you’re a butt too. Do better or move on.

This design has been added to my RedBubble, in case you would like to reiterate these sentiments.

If you agree but hate the design, why not consider supporting @gamercrafting ’s #operationsocialjustice instead? A bunch of my favourite dyers are producing exclusive colourways to raise money for worthy charities. It’s, like, the opposite of being a butt.

Tina St. Claire ( Tfail ) and Dereck Seltzer ( Haunted Euth ) began TMRWLND in their shared studio, crafting each layout, binding, and design details by hand—limiting each run to only 25 copies—even silkscreening each individual cover by hand, to create these precious objects for the world.

They both grew up avid learners and loners, finding solace and satisfaction in the late night bookstores and coffee shops, in the busy bustling L.A. Both were both compulsive creators, and found a large sense of satisfaction in the mutual work they shared and completed. St. Claire felt relaxed and most at ease when she was drawing; it was her safe space to work out thoughts and ideas that were not so easily expressed through words. Seltzer, on the other hand, has always had a dependency on creating and putting out material on a constant basis. He has said that he feels extremely uneasy if he does not have something creative to show for his time spent over the course of any given week. They both enjoyed the process of making work above all else, and rarely cared for the finished product. Seltzer compares this compulsion to an addict who enjoys the ritual of the preparation of the drugs prior to use—they truly enjoyed the process of making the art and zines as much, if not more than, the finished product.

Tomorrow at A Shop Called Quest in DTLA the TMRLWND book release opens to the public. The store will be open by 1p.m., and you may come early to view the artwork and pick up copies of the book and the pre printed shirt ( to beat the crowd ). Live Printing of shirts with exclusive designs for the night will be during the official release party hours of 6 p.m. - 9 p.m..

This is a rare opportunity to see the final collaborative works by T.s. Claire & I and to be able to purchase them - this is it folks, once these paintings sell out that piece of our history is finished and I want the art going to good homes and friends. All the income generated from my sales will go toward funding the documentary about Tina’s life and Art we will be filming tomorrow at the show which is being directed by the amazing Rich Ragsdale.

Please help spread the word, this is the last go for seeing this work altogether in person and the proceeds go toward helping Tina’s legacy continue to grow.

I hope to see you all there,

Dereck

“A Shop Called Quest and Not A Cult publishing are pleased to announce the official release party of TMRWLND: The Secret Stays Unknown - The Art of Dereck Seltzer & Tina St. Claire, an unabridged compendium of zines created by the two Los Angeles artists who not only had a flourishing artistic collaboration but were also partners in life.

This book release will feature signed copies of the book and special edition copies available for purchase, original art on display created by Tina St. Claire & Dereck Seltzer and live screen printing. Event specific items such as t-shirts, tote bags and even the TMRLWND book itself will be screen printed in store opening night only.

The release comes with more than a touch of poignancy in the wake of St. Claire succumbing to cancer last March at the age of 31. A portion of the funds raised by the proceeds will go toward supporting Tina St. Claire’s legacy and raising awareness of the GBM cancer that took her life.

The book launch will be celebrated from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at a Shop Called Quest, 300 S. Santa Fe Ave. B in downtown Los Angeles. ”

One last time…
