#guys who knit

LIVE

I dug out this jumper today for a yarn-based job interview and got weirdly nostalgic.

I knit this jumper in my first year of university over the course of a summer far too hot to be using aran weight yarn, and it was my go-to hoodie for most of uni. I packed it away when I moved, wrongly believing that knitted sweaters cling to my chest in the wrong way. Then I abandoned it, too worried that I’d grown out of it.

It’s a bit short in the body, but otherwise it fits perfectly, and the hood is still the most drapey, best-fitting hood on any of my clothes. Not only have I re-found my winter fave, I’ve now got the sweater-bug.

Anyone got any good recommendation for men’s/unisex cabled sweaters? I think the bulk of the cables helps cover my chest.

(Pattern is Lichen from Rowan winter collection… ‘08 maybe? I added the hood, as the original had a shawl collar.)

As I appear to have some spare time on my hands, I’ve decided now is probably a good opportunity to get back to designing. Before I do though, I just wanted to do a brief throwback.

I was reminded about this hat earlier this week. I designed it about a decade ago, making it quite possibly the first thing I ever designed, even though I only got around to writing it down last year.

This hat was designed for and named after my mum, Julia. She’s 62 years old and works as a school crossing lady, and is still going into work every day because the kids need her. In Britain our Mothers Day is this Sunday, and I’m not going to be able to see her on that day, or probably in the next month, or potentially even until after her birthday in Summer.

So far, no one else has made this hat. Or at least, if they have, they haven’t posted it to Ravelry.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this, other than I’m kinda homesick and would love it if more of my mum’s namesake were out there. From now until the end of the week, any sales of this pattern are going towards buying my mum chocolate because I love her. And also because when she buys herself chocolate she usually buys high dairy-content despite being dairy intolerant because it’s ‘cheaper’.

Pattern available here.

I don’t believe I have to keep saying this about my hobbies.

Knitting is not a cult. Ravelry is not a cult. There’s no conspiracy, and no shady group of evil knitters trying to ruin your pastime, and calling you out on your bigotry is not the same as trying to indoctrinate you. We’re just trying to get on with our knitting, same as you. If someone calls you out for being a butt and a group of people unfollow you, it’s not because they’re following the wills of their leaders, it’s because they think you’re a butt too. Do better or move on.

This design has been added to my RedBubble, in case you would like to reiterate these sentiments.

If you agree but hate the design, why not consider supporting @gamercrafting ’s #operationsocialjustice instead? A bunch of my favourite dyers are producing exclusive colourways to raise money for worthy charities. It’s, like, the opposite of being a butt.

This post didn’t seem to import from IG properly, so please enjoy the full post.

These sets are both one of a kind, and made from reclaimed, broken, donated or rescued jewellery and beads.

Both are available in my etsy store here.
