Days 1-4 of the 30-Day Art Challenge: Draw all the things I’ve been doing lately… in normal mode (combine and draw two prompts each day). In order, Day 1: Thief + Winter, Day 2: Jewel + Water, Day 3: Garden + Teeth, and Day 4: Old Book + Clutter.

Obviously, all of them have my old signature.

Vintage encyclopedia article about snails … I just love those lithographs ✨

Is it just me or old encyclopedias are much prettier than modern ones ?

Here’s a little curiosity from my beautiful Nietzsche collection: It is a small book called “Nietzsche’s prophetic words about states and people”, edited by Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche - Friedrich’s evil sister. It therefore consists of passages that she believed would “please the man of the party when he finds remarks kindred to his heart”, as she puts it in her creepy preface. In fact, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche was utterly confused by her brother’s works and hired Rudolf Steiner to explain it to her. Steiner very quickly abandoned the attempt, finding it impossible to teach her anything about Philosophy

“They talk too much for me. They have worries, aims, desires, that I cannot comprehend. I often sit with one of them in the little beer garden and try to explain to him that this is really the only thing: just to sit quietly, like this. They understand of course, they agree, they may even feel it so too, but only with words, only with words, yes, that is it–they feel it, but always with only half of themselves, the rest of their being is taken up with other things, they are so divided in themselves that none feels it with his whole essence; I cannot even say myself exactly what I mean.”

(All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque)

Mother’s Day is this Sunday so we would love to show you a sweet, sweet dedication.

It is very sweet to dedicate a book to your mother even if it does sound like a competition with a sister who has already done so. Almira does not only dedicate the book to her mother but gives her credit by calling out a mother’s affect: “that she may find the pious sentiments imbibed from herself, in some degree reflected from the following pages, is the wish of her daughter, Almira H. Lincoln.”

Familiar lectures on botany (1832) by Mrs. Phelps Lincoln.

It appears to be a well-worn copy … yet it is the cover of a 2017 paperback (288 pages) of a semi-autobiographical novel penned by an anonymous author, first published in Paris in 1971. The novel was banned in the United States until a 1981 Justice Department ruling declared that its contents were not obscene. It was also banned in Turkey.

The narrator Ashley Dvorak works in the personnel division of the paternal Longacre communications company. Although the narrator’s experiences are highly sexual and at times non-consensual there has been some doubt over the years that the novel was meant to be a work of fiction and reads more like a memoir.
