Hubble Discovery of Runaway Star Yields Clues to Breakup of Multiple-Star System

By Donna Weaver

As British royal families fought the War of the Roses in the 1400s for control of England’s throne, a grouping of stars was waging its own contentious skirmish — a star wars far away in the Orion Nebula.

The stars were battling each other in a gravitational tussle, which ended with the system breaking apart and at least three stars being ejected in different directions. The speedy, wayward stars went unnoticed for hundreds of years until, over the past few decades, two of them were spotted in infrared and radio observations, which could penetrate the thick dust in the Orion Nebula.

It was a busy night sky tonight off the deck. I was able to shoot in the doorway for a little warmth, even though it’s a balmy 12 degrees. Lazy astrophotography at it’s best.

handmade collage (2013)

Hello, Fig is a really nice Tumblr with original collage/cut-and-paste artwork using vintage elements. I’m going to Reblog one more item from it later today but I hope my readers will go over there and see all of the fun and interesting stuff this blog has to offer.

The Orion Nebula in Visible and Infrared

The Great Nebula in Orion is a colorful place. Visible to the unaided eye, it appears as a small fuzzy patch in the constellation of Orion. Long exposure, multi-wavelength images like this, however, show the Orion Nebula to be a busy neighborhood of young stars, hot gas, and dark dust. This digital composite features not only three colors of visible light but four colors of infrared light taken by NASA’s orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope as well. The power behind much of the Orion Nebula (M42) is the Trapezium - four of the brightest stars in the nebula. Many of the filamentary structures visible are actually shock waves - fronts where fast moving material encounters slow moving gas. The Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located about 1500 light years away in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

This is the Orion Nebula! ✨✨✨

Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope reveal the presence of protoplanetary disks, or proplyds, in the Orion Nebula. Newborn stars form in this beautiful nebula when clumps of hydrogen gas condense and become hot enough for stellar fusion!

The familiar stars of the constellation Orion the Hunter are caught sideways above the trees in this colorful night skyscape. Not a star at all but still visible to eye, the Great Nebula of Orion shines brightly below the Hunter’s belt stars, revealing its faint pinkish glow. Betelgeuse, the giant yellow star at Orion’s shoulder, has the color of warm and cozy terrestrial lighting, but so does another familiar stellar giant, Aldebaran!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!!
