After removing the tracker from his suit and arguing slightly with Ned about deactivating the Training Wheels Protocol, Peter felt he was ready. This was his chance to prove himself. He zipped up his jacket and opened the door.

“The glowy thing’s evidence. Keep it safe.” He reminded Ned.

“Okay.” His friend said dutifully, grabbing the power core.

Peter nodded and looked at the tracking program again. “They’re moving…” The glow from the hologram illuminated the black threads around his wrist.

Nadia did say it wasn’t a tracker… but…

She’d be so impressed if he really handled everything on his own. He didn’t need to worry her with a panic button.

Carefully, he untied the cord and tossed it to Ned.

“What’s this?” The other teen caught the cord bracelet and held it up.

“Uh, just something my partner gave me.” Peter shrugged nonchalantly, “She said something like "break the cord” in case of emergency, but I can totally handle it. Keep it for me till I get back.“

"You know you should think of a hero name already other than just calling her "partner” all the time.“

"Later…” Peter said distracted as he double-checked the map.

“Alright, Peter. Be careful!” Ned called after his friend as the door to their room closed.

Peter stared down through the skylight somewhat longingly at his friends splashing around in the hotel pool. There were just some times that he missed being a normal teenager. Then he could be messing around with the rest of the team.

He sighed, taking a deep breath and putting on his mask.

::Good evening, Peter. Congratulations on completing the rigorous Training Wheels program and gaining access to your suit’s full capabilities.:: A feminine voice spoke, making Peter jump.

“A-Ah… Thank you.” The teen didn’t know what else to say.

:: So where would you like to take me tonight?::

“Uhmmm…” The voice must have been a built-in AI, he concluded. “I put a tracker on someone. He’s a bad guy.” Peter nodded, putting his hands on his waist to try and steady himself from the jolt of surprise at this development.

::Tracker located. Plotting course to intercept target.::

Peter noted the red line tracing the path to his destination on the map that was displayed through his mask lenses.

He shrugged before he made a few leaps forward to start off. “Well, as long as I make it back to the decathlon, it’s fine.”

He hopped onto a truck just as he remembered, “Right… update.”

::Update who, Peter?:: The AI inquired.

“Ah, see… my partner. I’m supposed to tell her if I go out on my mission.” The teen said a little hesitantly.

:: I have a contact designated ‘Sabrina’ in my system. Do you want me to send her a text?::

“What? Mr. Stark knows who she is?” Peter’s voice cracked. The AI knew who he was referring to as “partner.” He groaned and mumbled, “You know what, I’m not surprised.” Tony Stark was Tony Stark, after all.

Resignedly, Peter said, “Okay… Just send her a text saying I’m tracking the bad guys now.”

When Peter found the tracker and heard the bad guys talking about a heist, the idea of catching the bad guys red-handed made him even more excited.

He was right to leave the bracelet in the hotel. He could totally handle a heist. And when he did, Mr. Stark would know what he was capable of and Nadia would be so proud. He grinned under his mask before he launched a web line to the cargo truck that drove past.

image

“Oh God… I’m such an idiot!” Peter berated himself as he pounded his fists uselessly on the door of the storage facility, panicking. If he had the bracelet, Nadia could have easily found him and portalled them out of here. But he didn’t and his wrist was bare beneath his suit’s glove… so he had to rely on himself to try and figure out the right combination for the time lock. He had to get to Ned. His friend had a bomb that was ready to go off if it was exposed to x-rays.

He groaned in frustration when the fifth combination didn’t work. He took another breath and solved for the next one.

image

Ned paced back and forth in the hotel room he shared with Peter. His friend wasn’t back yet and he’d been gone the whole night. It was almost time to go. He spotted the black cord on the top of the bedside table and curiosity made him pick it up. Just then, Liz knocked on the door of the hotel room.

“Ned! Peter!”

The teen immediately stuffed the glowy thing and the bracelet in his pocket before taking a breath, wondering what he would say when he opened the door.

image

Nadia’s phone barely rang once before she picked up.

Peter! You-”

::Nadia! The glowy thingy’s a bomb and Ned has it!:: The vigilante’s high and panicked voice cut her off.

“Shit…” The young woman cursed. She didn’t see it, but Peter’s eyes widened. He’d never heard her curse. “My magic is still a bit weird since I got sick. Break the cord, it’ll help me pinpoint your location.”

::I-I… I don’t have it-:: His voice cracked.

Nadia’s eyes widened in disbelief, “What?! Peter!-”

:: I think the nationals just finished. I can’t get a hold of Ned yet. Get to him! Get the glowy thing!::

No use getting mad.

“Alright… Alright. Where are you?” Nadia focused instead on pulling up a search and checking the exact location of the nationals.

::I’m near DC. I can see the memorial.::

“Keep dialing.” She said briskly before ending the call.

Finding the building where the decathlon was being held, she tried to conjure a portal. It sparked for a moment but dissipated.

Nadia’s mother had been watching her daughter from the entrance to the kitchen. “Nadia. Your magic is still a bit erratic. You won’t be able to-”

“I know!” The young woman snapped. “But I have to try.” She ran her hand over her face when the portal still didn’t form. She breathed in deeply, trying to calm herself, knowing that chaotic emotions wouldn’t help her either.

Anya sighed. “Here. Take these.” She slipped the bronze vambraces from her arms and snapped them on her daughter’s. “They’ll help you manage your magic for now, but I’m warning you. Your spells will be severely limited. Be very careful.”

Nadia nodded quickly and gave her mother a brief hug before finally conjuring a successful portal.

image

The elevator creaked ominously, causing its passengers to look at each other anxiously. Ned hoped Peter would swing in soon. He just talked to him on the phone earlier, Peter most likely knew they were at the memorial. Ned stuck his hands in his pockets to pull out his phone, but when he did, a thin black bracelet fell out. He eyed it for a moment.

“In case of emergency… break the cord…”

He picked it up and casually turned to face the wall…

God, I really hope this works.

Taking one end in each hand, he took a gulp of air and tugged. The black threads snapped and dissolved into golden sparks.

“Wow… that’s awesome…” Ned whispered.

image

Nadia tried to catch the team while they were still at the building where the decathlon was held. She had no luck picking them out among the crowd of dallying students and teachers, so she quickly made her way to the Washington Memorial. The smoke and dust rising from near the top told her the explosion already happened.

Using the chaos as a distraction, she spell-switched her robes. She spotted a figure near the base of the memorial and recognized her as Michelle, one of Peter’s decathlon teammates. Nadia arrived a second after Peter did.

“Oh my God! You made it! Can you portal me up there?”

Nadia shook her head regretfully, “It’s risky with my magic right now. Get up there and get to them. I’ll try to hold up the elevator from down here but hurry. My magic might…”

Peter nodded and leaped onto the side of the memorial and hurriedly started climbing. Nadia, on the other hand, dashed towards the entrance of the structure.

A guard tried to bar her from entering. “Sorry ma'am, it’s not safe. We’re not letting anyone in.”

The young woman was extremely annoyed, “Do I look like a friggin’ tourist to you?!” She pushed past and went to the bottom of the elevator shaft. “Get these doors open!” She couldn’t waste her magic prying the doors open when there was perfectly capable staff.

The security guard was pretty dumbstruck and moved to do what the robed vigilante asked, using a simple button in the control room to open the doors.

Looking up the shaft, Nadia could see the bottom of the elevator quiver. It would be dangerous if she miscast and formed the barrier spell too high. Usually, a visual was enough, but her magic was unreliable right now. She bit her lip, quickly going through her options.

Suddenly, something in the back of her mind tingled and she knew the cord was snapped.

Ned.

She smiled in relief, the small beacon gave her a focus for her magic. She lifted her arms and concentrated on casting her spell a little below where she felt the magical summons.

image

:: It looks like your partner is building an energy field a few feet below the elevator.:: Karen reported, the AI having detected a spike in strange energy close to the elevator car.

“Okay- that buys us some time, right?” Peter said, trying to figure out how to break through the window near the top of the monument.

:: Judging how the field is in flux and the impact the elevator will cause from the slight drop, it might only hold for a few seconds.::

Peter took a deep breath and ignored the men who were shouting at him from the helicopter. Then, he jumped. Going over the helicopter’s blades, he shot a web line and pulled to direct his momentum toward the one window. He heard a metallic snap and screams just as he broke through. The elevator started falling for a moment, then stopped.

On the ground floor, Nadia grunted and was pushed down to her knees. “Crap!”

From the top of the elevator shaft, Peter shot out as many web lines as possible, connecting them from the elevator to the concrete ceiling and the steel frame of the shaft.

He managed to attach three before Nadia’s spell broke. The elevator shuddered violently, but it didn’t fall.

Peter lowered himself to the elevator and pried the doors open for the last three passengers to escape- Ned, Liz, and Mr. Harrington. One by one, he helped boost them up onto the landing. Changing his voice a bit, he asked, “So… uh- is everyone okay?”

Liz and the others nodded, breathless. The elevator groaned again before the ceiling finally gave way and with a yelp, Peter fell with the elevator car. Just as the vigilante fell through a cloud of dust, he twisted and shot another line of webbing to the side of the shaft. Quickly, he rappelled down to the ground.

A lot of people were taking videos and pictures, he had to get going and change fast. He already missed the entire competition. His classmates and mister Harrington would be looking for him.

Where was Nadia?

He spotted the person he was looking for talking to another robed figure. The other figure’s costume was similar to Nadia’s, only dark purple and black with a deep hood.

Peter jogged to them, “Hey… Hey- uh….” He realized how the absence of a superhero name for Nadia would quickly turn into a problem. When the young woman looked to him, he gasped. “Your nose is bleeding.”

She waved him off and swayed a bit before the other woman put steadying arms on Nadia’s shoulders. “I’m okay.” Pulling a piece of cloth from a pocket, she dabbed away the blood.

Sparks formed a portal and the two robed women walked towards it, Nadia looking warily at all the people bringing out their phones. She looked to Peter before stepping through the portal, the glow from the eyes of her mask seeming to intensify. “We’ll talk when you get back.”

Peter gulped, a tingle going down his spine. Turning around, he addressed the crowd. “Nothing to see here, people.” When the portal shut, he nodded and waved before he ran out, heading for his backpack.

image

May was tearful and hugged Peter tightly when he got off the bus back in Queens. He looked around hopefully for Nadia but was both relieved and quite worried when she didn’t seem to be in the school parking lot.

The next day, he dropped by the café to see her. She was clearing a table when he waved at her from outside, his half-smile hesitant and unsure. Her expression went a bit blank when she looked up and spotted him. With a curt nod, she met him outside.

“Nadia… I-”

She cut him off with a raised hand. “My shift ends in five minutes, I’ll meet you at the apartment.” Her sentence was short. She handed him a key and went back inside the cafe.

Peter felt downcast. Nervous and a little ashamed too. He walked to Nadia’s place with his head down.

When he unlocked the door, Stevie was there to greet him. The teen took comfort in the canine’s happy bark and knelt to hug and pet the dog. “Looks like I really screwed up, Stevie.” He sighed.

“Peter Parker, right?” An unfamiliar feminine voice made him jump up. A woman was standing a few steps from him. She had brown hair in a ponytail and pale blue eyes. Something about her reminded him of Nadia. “Did Nadia send you over?”

“Uh… yeah?” He answered hesitantly. Who was this lady? She looked like she was in her thirties.

“Anya Capelli. It is very nice to finally meet you.” She held out her hand and smiled. Peter reluctantly took it. Capelli meant she was closely related to his partner. “Nadia does talk a lot about you.”

“Sh-she does?” A hopeful look crossed the teen’s face for a moment before his eyes turned down again. “Not so much now though, I think.” Peter mumbled, “She’s mad.”

Anya looked at the boy sympathetically. “I know what that is like. Even when she was little, she hardly ever got mad. When she does though…” The woman huffed out a laugh.

“I screwed up real bad. She… sorta tried to… h-help me out. I-I pretty much… ig-ignored the help and made her- made her worry.” Peter stuttered, doing his best to explain the problem, but be discrete about Nadia’s vigilante activities.

Anya nodded, walking to the kitchen. “Soda? Water?” Peter followed and shook his head, taking a seat at the small dining table.

“You definitely riled her up when you told her you did not have the cord she had given you. Quite mad she may have been, but she insisted on going to DC to help you, even if her magic was still a bit unstable.” The woman prepared herself a mug of tea.

“She was panicking so much about it, she had to use these to better control her arcane energy.” She held up one arm, pointing at a wide bronze band Peter had seen on Nadia’s arms at DC, before taking a seat herself. “She will be mad for a few days. Maybe go harder than necessary on you during your training, but she always forgives.”

Peter sat with his mouth open, staring at the woman.

She knew.

As though reading his mind, she said easily, “Yes, I know your alter-ego, Spider-man. Your voice is hard to mistake for another person’s if you recently heard it. Keep that in mind.” Anya seemed to smile with her eyes as she gave him a sly look.

“You’re a sorcerer, too?! Is-Is it a family trade or-or something?” Peter asked excitedly.

Another hero?

She let out a soft, breathy laugh. “In a way, yes. I would have thought Nadia might have told you a little about me.”

“I-I don't… I don’t think so. Are you her aunt?” Peter tried to search his memories for any conversation about Nadia’s family. She only really every talked about her grandmother and her-

“Mom? I thought you were going to be out until tonight?” Nadia appeared at the entrance to the kitchen.

Wait…

“Mom?!” Peter’s voice cracked, confused stare flickering back and forth between the two women.

And that was how they relocated to the living room and Nadia ended up explaining how her mother’s magic messed with the speed of her aging… which explained why Nadia’s mother looked only slightly older than May when Nadia herself was supposed to be just twenty-three.

“You were the other sorcerer at the memorial,” Peter concluded.

Anya nodded, sipping at her tea. “I had to bring Nadia home after she stressed her magic. Sorcerers in our family rarely ever get sick. When we do, recovery is swift. But it interferes with our control of mystical energy for a while longer, even if our bodies are well.”

“Are you okay now, Nadia?” Peter asked, concerned. “You had a nosebleed back at the memorial.”

Said young woman nodded sternly, before nudging Stevie off her lap and standing. “Speaking of which…”

Peter gulped at the serious glare that Nadia was throwing him, putting up his hands. “Nadia-” He backed away slowly, “Nadia, I-”

“Why the hell did you just leave the cord!?” She yelled, gathering a small sphere of magic in her hands and throwing it roughly at Peter. Stevie went wild again and started dashing around the room.

The mystic sparks pushed him roughly back and made him sputter. The force shoved him through a wall of shattered glass and made him disappear into the mirror dimension.

Nadia stomped through right after him.

Anya sighed. It had been a while since she saw her daughter mad like that. It was strange, but it was a good sign. Nadia only got that mad when it concerned people she was close to. Anya looked to the grey dog that had started to calm down but was still pacing across the carpet anxiously, whining.

“They’ll take a while.” Anya addressed the retriever. “Do you want to go for a walk?”

Stevie barked and eagerly went to sit at the door while he waited for the woman to get his leash.

All forms of magic were forbidden on the continent. It had been that way all of Hope’s life. She was the youngest child of the King of Asgardia, a princess. Her eldest brother, Thor, was being readied to take the throne, but her brother Loki, the middle child, had strong ambitions as well.

Thor was supposed to be crowned king last year, but his engagement to a princess from a neighboring kingdom fell through when their father found out that Thor had taken a lover from the village. The princess hadn’t wanted to marry Thor in the first place, but her father wanted to form a permanent alliance with the kingdom of Ultron.

Footsteps echoed in the corridor as Hope approached the door to her father’s throne room. Thor and Loki were waiting at the door for her.

“Do you know what he wants?” Hope asks her brothers.

They both shook their heads.

“Perhaps Thor is to be engaged again,” Loki suggests, and his brother shoves him.

“Maybe he found out who tricked the guards into letting them into the vault,” Thor retorts.

The doors open and the three of them go silent. Odin sits on his golden throne as the guards escort them into the throne room. Their mother, Frigga, sits on a smaller throne to Odon’s right, and Odin’s scepter sits in his left hand. His bad eye is covered by a golden eye patch.

Thor and Loki bow, and Hope curtsies as they approach the throne.

“Rise my children,” Odin commands. “I have good news. I have been able to secure a permanent alliance with the kingdom of Ultron.”

“That’s wonderful news, father,” Thor says.

But Loki exchanges a look with his sister. “What are their terms?”

“King Anthony has a son, the same age as Hope. Prince Peter will inherit the throne one day, and he needs a queen by his side.”

“Me?” Hope asks.

“Father, I beg you to reconsider,” Loki pleads.

“It is done. We will leave for Ultron in two day’s time,” Odin says. “Leave me.”

-

Meag sat at her vanity while Em braided her medium length brown hair.

“Are you meeting a suitor today?” Em asks. Em had been Meag’s friend since they were children. A child of noble birth that had grown up around the court, and sent to be Meag’s lady in waiting when she was sixteen.

“I hope not. The last three have been truly awful,” Meag groans.

The two of them laugh. Meag’s eyes train out the window as the knights pass through the courtyard, heading to their training area.

“Are you waiting for a knight to ask for you hand?” Em asks.

“I believe you’re the one pining after a knight, my friend.” Em had been head over heels for Natasha, the only female knight in Ultron, since Natasha had been put on rotation as one of Meag’s royal guards. Sam was currently on duty, standing right outside the door to Meag’s chambers.

“Sometimes, I believe I should have just married Prince Thor,” Meag admits. “He is pretty handsome.”

“But he wouldn’t love you,” Em replies.

“Plenty of kings do not love their queens.”

“You’re ready to go downstairs,” Em says, taking their hands off Meag’s finished braid.

“Sam!” Meag calls, and the guard opens the door.

“My lady?”

“Escort me to the throne room, please.”

-

The evening wind chilled Minnie to the bone, and she pulled her cloak tighter around her body as she watched the palace window from the roof. She’d been promised six million gold coins for this. It better be worth it.

Her daggers were hidden in her clothing, invisible to anybody but her. With the magic gone, the only problem would be getting into the castle. She’d been on the same roof for hours, waiting, watching any movement in and out of the castle to formulate a plan.

The easiest entrance seemed to be a tower window in the east wing of the castle. It was connected to the main castle, and it seemed to be a bedroom. With such a large window, it had to be a member of the court. The servants most likely slept somewhere else on the grounds.

She would need to be in and out before first light, but now, she would watch and wait.

-

Meag entered the throne room, escorted by Sam. Her father was seated on his crimson throne, and her brother was already waiting. Pepper sat on a throne beside Tony. She wasn’t their mother, but his second wife after their mother had passed in childbirth. Peter looked at her nervously. She could tell whatever their father was going to tell them, he was worried about. She patted him on the shoulder in reassurance.

“I thought all your children needed to be present,” Meag spoke up.

“Morgan is too young to care about court politics,” her father replies. “And do not speak out of turn, daughter.”

“Apologies, father.”

“As both of you know, our alliance with the kingdom of Asgardia fell through when that prince decided he’d rather have a commoner than my daughter.”

“Now, Tony. You’re getting worked up,” Pepper says.

“I have corresponded with King Odin and we have come to a decision regarding the alliance. Peter, you shall marry his daughter, Princess Hope, in a fortnight.”

“Father,” Meag starts.

“I am honored to do this for my kingdom,” Peter interrupts. “Thank you father.”

Peter leaves the throne room before Meag can stop him, and Sam walks up to escort her back to her chambers.

-

The moon was high, and it was time for Minnie to spring her plan into action. She scaled the wall of the tower, being careful not to make a sound. And as she finally reached the window, she climbed in, scanning the room around her. It was empty.

She walked over to the dresser first, eyeing a few letters, when the door opened slowly. A girl with long red hair slipped into the room and jumped at the sight of her.

“You scared me!” she exclaims. “You’re my new lady in waiting, correct?”

Minnie thought for a moment. This was the family she was supposed to kill? The princess didn’t seem like she could hurt a fly, let alone tyrannically rule an entire kingdom. So Minnie did not reach for her daggers.

“Yes. My lady.” She forced herself to curtsy.

“None of that,” Hope insists. “I would like us to be friends! What is your name?”

“Mi..Mina.”

“Nice to meet you, Mina. I am Princess Hope. I’ll get my guard and he’ll take you to his quarters.”

Hope turned towards the door and Minnie looks around in panic. There had to be an exit. She could run, forget about the six million coins..

A female guard entered the room with Hope. “Mina, this is Sif. She’s going to take you to your chambers.”

Minnie nods and follows the brunette woman into the corridor. What had she just gotten herself into?

state of grace- Chapter 8

Meag looks up as Stephen walks into the cafe, walking past Steve’s table as the latter flares at him.

“Hey, sorry I’m late,” he says loudly, taking a seat across from Meag. He lowers his voice to a whisper.”You okay?”

“Fine. Sorry, I overreacted a bit..”

“No, you didn’t. Besides, who would turn down free coffee?” he replies with a chuckle.

Meag takes a sip of her coffee and starts to calm as Stephen tells her a funny story about his childhood. He’d come from Nebraska, she had learned. He’d lived on a farm, and was the oldest of three siblings. His parents were very proud of him. His younger brother, Victor, was still in high school.

“What about your other sibling?”

“Oh um… My sister, Donna. She passed away last year.”

Well, now Meag felt like a huge jerk.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t-“

“It’s okay. You didn’t know,” he assures her. “So, Bruce is your brother, right?”

“Yep, he’s my only sibling. I’m the baby of the family. Though Tony’s been his best friend since we were kids so he’s like another brother to me.”

“So, what do you want to do after you graduate?” Stephen asks.

“First, grad school. Then, I’m gonna go work at a fancy lab. I’m applying to internships for next summer at Stark Industries and Pym Tech.”

“Wow. I’m pre-med so I’m headed to med school. I want to be a neurosurgeon.”

Meag looks up to see Steve staring at them from a few tables away, and Stephen takes her hand.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving them something to stare at,” he replies with a smirk.

multiversal madness- Chapter 11

multiversal madness

11. cliffside

Meag opened her eyes as the man who had impersonated her husband portaled her to another location. It was a cliffside, they were just off the road. There was no guard rails. It was very unsafe. And then, she made the mistake of looking down. It was a pretty long drop. How had Stephen survived that crash?

Meag gasps as he grabs her arm, spinning her around to face the road. Before them, Stephen, Wong, Tony, both Natasha’s and Loki’s, and all three Peters stood, as well as Minnie, who pulled out a knife.

“Stephy! Minnie! You guys are okay!” Meag exclaims.

Stephen steps towards his alternate self.

“Uh uh uh!” he grabs Meag. “I could very easily push her off the cliff.” She struggles to get out of his grip. “Wouldn’t it be poetic? The woman you love plummeting to her death off the same cliff that you so recklessly plummeted off a few years ago?”

“What do you want?” Stephen asks.

“What do I want? I want your life. I want your universe. But since you had to come crawling back, and my sweet Meag has betrayed me..”

“I’m not your sweet anything,” Meag interjects.

“If I can’t have her, neither can you,” Stephen’s alternate self finishes, pushing Meag off the cliff. The others gasp, and Stephen and Tony both dive after her, Tony’s nano suit forming around him.

“He’s used a paralysis spell on her,” Stephen yells to Tony. “She can’t move to stop her fall!”

“FRIDAY, a little help here!” Tony boosts his rockets to increase speed as Meag starts falling faster, faster.

“Go get her,” Stephen whispers to the cloak. It mimics nodding at him.

“Tony, catch me,” Stephen says.

“Okay, doc, but why-“ The cloak releases Stephen and Tony catches him by the arm as the cloak of levitation flies down to catch Meag. It wraps around her, bringing her back up to them.

Stephen mutters an incantation to stop the paralysis spell, and it does, as Meag flails a bit in the air.

“Let the cloak guide you!” Stephen calls. They finally reach the top of the cliff, where the others were all engaged in a fight with the alternate Stephen.

Minnie brings out a knife to stab him and the Watcher appears.

“Stop. He must be returned to his universe.”

“Take him,” Stephen says. “And do not let him return.”

“Do not worry. He shall be under my watchful eye,” the Watcher says. “Are you all ready?”

The all three Peter’s pile into a hug, and Nat pats her alternate self on the back. President Loki scoffs at the others but blows a kiss to Minnie, who blushes, making Loki mad, despite it being himself. They gather around the Watcher and dissapear back to their own universes.

“As you’ve learned by now, Stephen, sometimes it is okay to break the rules,” the Watcher says.

“And sometimes it’s not,” Stephen replies, gesturing to the empty and destroyed universe around them.

“Agreed. This universe’s version of yourself needs to be stopped and returned here,” the Watcher replies. He turns to Minnie. “Hello, Minnie. I am the Watcher.”

“How does it know my name?” Minnie asks.

“He watches over the multiverse,” Stephen answers.

“You are a hero in my universes,” the Watcher says. “A villain as well in others.”

“That’s a bit unnerving,” Minnie replies. “Can you take us home?”

“Of course. We must hurry.” The Watcher snaps his fingers and they appear in the sanctum. Wong, Hope, Em, both Natasha’s, all three Peter’s, both Loki’s, and Tony were all gathered.

“You’ll come back when we find him?” Stephen asks the Watcher.

He nods. “I’ll be watching. Waiting.” He dissapeared and everyone was finally back. Well, almost everyone.

“What’s the plan?” Stephen asks.

“We have their location,” Tony says. “How about an ambush?”

“How are we supposed to get out of here?” Minnie asks. “This is all your fault!”

“Me?! How is this my fault?” Stephen demands.

“If you hadn’t been playing around, we wouldn’t be in this mess! Now everyone’s in danger, and we’re the only ones that know the truth!”

“Surely Wong has figured it out by now,” Stephen says. “He’s probably got a plan.”

“Yeah, well how about a plan to get us out of here? You don’t have your magic ring thingy, do you?”

Stephen sighs. “I don’t. He took it before he left me here.”

“The others will find us,” Minnie says. “They have to.”

~

“Any luck?” Hope asks, entering the sanctum with Em and Peter.

“Stephen and Minnie are definitely not in this universe,” Wong says. “I can’t track them. As for Meag, he’s blocking my spell. She’s untraceable.”

“Is there anything we can do?” Em asks.

“We can look for something in the books,” Peter suggests. “Do you think there’s a spell that could stop him? Or override his spell so we can find Meag?”

“Maybe,” Wong replies. “Let’s get to work.”

state of grace- Chapter 6

Everyone starts to gather in the main room of the frat house. The couches are pushed out of the way by some of the football players so everyone can sit in the floor. As everyone gathers in one big circle, Tony enters, wearing his glow stick getup, and holding a glass bottle.

“We just needed a beer bottle, Tony,” Bruce says.

“I’m bougie, bitch.”

Tony takes his place in the circle between Clint and Rhodey. He elects to go first and Meag sighs in relief. Her friend could be a bit too much sometimes. He turned the bottle round and round until it stopped, pointing towards his girlfriend, Pepper, who breathed a sigh of relief. They both crawled to meet in the middle of the circle and kissed quickly before returning to their seats.

Meag watches as a few people take their turns, and thankfully no one lands on her. Bucky drags Stephen into the circle, taking seats across the circle from Meag. Bucky takes the bottle and spins it, watching as it slows near Hope. But it doesn’t stop. It stops in front of Sharon.

Bucky exchanges a dissapointed look with Hope before giving Sharon a quick kiss.

A few more turns pass and Meag watches Stephen the whole time. He hadn’t taken a turn, and he also hadn’t been picked yet. Meag loos up as Hope spins the bottle, and it spins around the circle for a moment before landing across the circle. Meag’s eyes go wide. It had stopped just short of Bucky and landed on Peter.

Hope and Peter both blush profusely as they crawl to the middle of the circle and he gives her a quick peck on the lips.

Tony laughs and takes the bottle as they return to their seats. “My turn, again!”

He spins the bottle and it lands on Bruce. “Pucker up, Brucie bear!”

“Seriously, Stark?” Thor pipes up from beside his boyfriend.

“There’s enough of me to go around, Point Break, all you had to do was ask.” Tony smirks, leaving the 6’3” football player speechless.

“Why don’t I take a turn,” Meag says, trying to change the subject. She takes the bottle and spins it a little too fast. It goes around the circle three times before it slows to a stop. She looks up to where the bottle is pointing and locks eyes with Stephen.

Her jaw practically falls open. She couldn’t believe out of all the people.. Why did it have to be that arrogant jerk, Stephen Strange. Color rose ok her cheeks and she realized she had frozen in place.

“This is the part where you kiss him,” Tony tells her. Bruce gives him a pointed look.

Meag nods and goes to the center of the circle, where Stephen was already waiting with a smirk on his face.

“Don’t worry,” he whispers. “I’m a very good kisser.”

She scoffs but is cut off when he presses his lips to hers. Stephen was kissing her. And she wouldn’t admit it, but she didn’t actually mind. She pulled away after a few seconds and hurried back to her seat as Tony whistled at them.

A few more turns passed, Sam kissed Sharon, Wanda kissed Vision, Carol kissed Val, though a surprising development occurred when Em took a turn and it landed on Nat. Meag smiled to herself, knowing those two would be great together.

Minnie had ducked out of the game earlier on, as it was clear Tony was trying to take as many turns as he could. A couple others had left as well.

Someone picked up the bottle and decided to spin it. It was Steve. The bottles turned a couple of times around the circle, and Meag let out a sigh of relief every time it passed her. But as it started to slow, the end started getting closer and closer to her until it stopped, pointing directly at her. She looked down at the bottle, and up at Steve, who didn’t look the least bit surprised or weirded out.

She stands up. “I’m done playing.” Meag turns on her heel, heading out to the backyard. Stephen watches her for a moment and stands up as well.

“I think we’re done,” Tony says, and the group dispersed.

Stephen heads through the kitchen and stops at the screen door. Meag was sitting on a bench on the back patio, looking up at the moon.

He walks up to the bench and clears his throat. “Can I sit here?”

“Go ahead.”

He takes a seat beside her and she wrinkles her nose in disgust at the whiff of something pungent.

“Are you wearing cologne?” she asks.

“A little,” he admits. “Are you okay?”

“Not really,” she admits. “I thought I was over him, but.. I saw him with Peggy earlier this week, and then what just happened…”

“It’s okay,” Stephen says. “Everyone heals in their own time.”

“He broke up with me in May, giving me the bs excuse that he didn’t have time for me. The week after, I see pictures of him online with Peggy. And now, with the game, I just don’t know…”

“Do you want me to drive you home?” Stephen asks.

“I’d like that,” she replies. Meag sends a text to the group that Stephen is taking her home, and he walks her out to an old gray Toyota.

“Nice car.”

“It’s not much, my dad got it for me when I started college,” Stephen says. “One day, I’m gonna have a Lamborghini.”

“I bet you will,” Meag replies. Stephen walks around the hood to get to the driver’s seat. Meag got in the passenger side and Stephen started up the car, backing out of the driveway.

“So, friends?” Meag asks.

“Friends,” Stephen agrees. A couple minutes pass and he stops in front of the sorority house.

“See you on monday,” he says.

Meag waves to him as she walks towards the door, her heart fluttering as Stephen drove away.

state of grace- Chapter 5

Meag, Hope, Em, and Minnie enter the fraternity house, and the party was already in full swing. People were dancing, drinking, and laughing, among other things.

Meag spotted Tony at the entrance to the kitchen, carrying a tray of jell-o shots so bright they looked like they’d give you superpowers. He wore a pair of large plastic sunglasses and had a glow stick necklace around his neck.

“You think Bucky is here yet?” Hope asks.

“He’ll show up if he’s not already,” Em assured her.

“I’m gonna go get a drink!” Minnie exclaims, wandering off to find the refreshments. The three of them scatter as well, hoping to enjoy themselves.

Hope wanders through the crowd and bumps into a guy, whose face goes red as he starts to apologize. She laughs. “It’s okay. Are you new around here? I haven’t seen you before.”

“I just started. I’m a freshman,” he says. “My name is Peter. Peter Parker.”

“Nice to meet you, Peter. I’m Hope, second year, and member of the sorority alpha lambda phi.”

“Oh, the sister sorority,” he says. “I’m a pledge for this frat. What are you majoring in?”

“English. You?”

“Chemistry with a minor in Photography.”

“Oh! Photography! Can you show me your photos?” Hope asks. Peter brings out his phone to show Hope some of his favorite photos.

-

Em grabbed a cookie from the food table as Natasha walked up.

“Hey, angel. Having fun?”

“Yes! It’s so nice to meet all these new friends,” Em says.

“If you say so.”

“It looks like they’re having fun,” Em says, gesturing to Tony, who had somehow acquired even more glow sticks and was waving them around wildly.

“Is he high?” Nat asks, clearly in disbelief that the one of the top students of the university was dancing like he was in a nightclub on some sort of drugs.

“I think he’s just like that,” Em replies. They both break into a laugh at the ridiculousness that is Tony.

-

Minnie was wading through the crowd, a red plastic cup in hand. When she was a pledge for the sorority, she didn’t have nearly as much fun at the initiation party. She was too nervous. Now, she had great friends, and she was going to have a good time.

She took a sip from her cup and as she did, her eyes locked with a pair of green ones across the room. He was tall, with slicked back black hair. He wore a dark green button down with the sleeves rolled up, a pair of black jeans, and matching boots. He smirked at her, and Minnie realized she was staring. She was staring and choking on her drink. She stops after a moment and turns red from embarrassment. This hot guy just saw her almost choke to death.

“Very charming,” he says, clearly amused.

“I haven’t seen you around the fraternity before.”

“I’m not a member,” he says. “I’m assuming you’re a sorority girl?”

“Alpha lambda phi,” she replies. “I’m Minnie.”

“Loki Odinson.”

-

Meag leaned on the threshold of the kitchen door, taking a sip from her soda as Stephen walked up.

“I didn’t think you’d show up.”

“And miss the chance to see you in your natural habitat?” he jokes.

“Have a drink. You look like you’re being held hostage,” Meag says.

“He is,” Bucky says, walking up and putting an arm around his roommate’s shoulder. “Meagie, Stephen here is my new roommate.”

“What an interesting combination,” Meag says.

“Have you seen Hope?” Bucky asks. “I’ve been looking all over for her.”

“Last time I saw her, she was talking to a pledge,” Meag says. “By the speakers.”

“Thanks.” Bucky wanders off to find Hope and Stephen stands there awkwardly.

“So…” he trails off.

Meag’s eyes dart in another direction and then back towards him. “Quick, pretend I said something funny!”

Stephen laughs just as Steve walks up.

“Hey,” Steve says, looking at Meag.

“Hi.”

“I didn’t think you’d be here,” he says.

“Well, I am.”

Steve looks between her and Stephen. “Is this your-“

“Stephen Strange. Meag’s friend in the chemistry department,” Stephen interjects.

“Steve Rogers. Part of the frat. You should really think about joining, Stefan.”

“Stephen. I can spell it out if you need me to,” he says sarcastically. Meag laughs quietly as Steve’s expression turns angry. He walks away and Meag bursts into laughter.

“Hey guys!” Tony calls to the crowd through a megaphone he has mysterious acquired. “We’re going to play spin the bottle!”

state of grace- Chapter 3

Meag entered the room and started towards the back corner, where Em and Hope were already waiting. She passes by Stephen’s chair and he looks up.

“I didn’t know you were in this class too.”

She stops in her tracks. “What are you doing here?”

“Some of my credits didn’t transfer,” he answers with a shrug.

Meag spares a look back to Em and Hope. The seat they’d saved for her was just filled by another student. She scanned the room for another seat. Fuck.

She flops down in the seat beside Stephen just as the professor walks in.

“Hello, everyone. Make sure to remember your seats, these will be your partners for the semester, and for your group projects.”

Meag clenched her fist in anger. There was no way she would work on a project with this asshole. No freaking way.

“I guess we’ll be seeing a lot of each other,” he says, his lip curling up in a smirk. “Partner. Don’t worry, you won’t have to do a thing, you have the best pre-med student from Columbia on your team.”

She seethed with anger. Anger at him for being such an arrogant prick. And anger at herself for the butterflies that had seemed to lodge themselves in her stomach.

1. welcome to shield university

Meag finally reached the cafe, and in record time too. Or so she thought.

“Genius girl! Your coffee’s getting cold!” Minnie called Meag from their usual table.

Meag took her seat and the four of them began to sip their drinks. They looked up as a couple walked in, heading past them and towards the back of the cafe. It was Steve and Peggy.

“I can’t believe he’s already dating Peggy,” Hope says. “You guys just broke up in may!”

“Men ain’t shit,” Minnie says, leaning back in her chair.

“I’ll drink to that,” Hope says, lifting her cup in a toast.

“All jokes aside, are you okay?” Em asks. “We can take our coffee and go out on the quad.”

“I’d actually like that,” Meag says, stealing a glance at Steve and Peggy being cute in the back of the cafe.

The four of them headed outside, walking towards a big shady tree on the south edge of the quad.

A guy bumps into Meag, making her spill her coffee all over him and his blue shirt.

“Oh my god, I am so sorry-“ Meag trails off as she looks up at him. He had tousled dark hair and eyes as blue as the sky. And he looked very annoyed.

“I’m just looking for the chemistry building,” he says, looking between the girls as Meag remained speechless, her mouth falling open in surprise.

“It’s right there,” Em says, pointing to the building behind them.

“Thanks.” He stomps off towards the building and Meag turns to look at her friends.

“You okay, Meaggie?” Minnie asks with a chuckle.

“Who is that?” Meag asks.

“I’m not sure,” Em says.

“He was wearing a Columbia shirt,” Minnie says. “I bet he transferred from there.”

“Oh, I didn’t notice the Columbia shirt,” Meag says. “Except it brought out the blue in his eyes..”

“Hey, maybe this is just what you need to get over you know who,” Hope says.

The 8:00 AM bell on the clock tower chimes and the girls all gathered their things. Unfortunately, they all had 8:00 AM classes this year.

“I’ll see you guys for lunch,” Meag says. “And see you in psych, Hope and Em!”

Meag backs towards the chemistry building and loses her balance. The boy from earlier catches her.

“You really need to watch where you’re going,” he says before walking away.

“Thank…you..”

Meag reached the classroom as other students filed in. Professor Selvig was handing out copies of the syllabus. The only open seat was next to Columbia boy. She hurries to the back of the classroom and slips into the seat.

“Sorry about your shirt,” she says to him. “Did you transfer from Columbia?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Meag Banner,” she says.

“Stephen Strange.”

“Nice to meet you, Stephen. Are you biochem too? what year are you?”

“I’m a third year biochem major. Pre-med. This senseless chatter going to end any time soon?”

“I just…I’m the vice president of the Student Chemistry Club, so I was going to invite you to our meeting this friday..”

“No, thank you.” He looks down at his syllabus as Professor Selvig starts the lecture. Meag huffs, crossing her arms. She didn’t need this jerk in her club anyway. This was going to be a long semester.

8. imposter

Meag walked into the library with purpose. She was fueled by her rage. She knew everything. She found him faced towards a bookshelf.

“Stephen!” she yells at him.

He turns to face her, a smirk on his face.

“Yes, darling?”

“Don’t call me that! You’re not my Stephen, are you?”

“So, you figured it out,” he says. “What are you going to do? I’m the only one that knows where your husband and your friend are. I’m the only one that can bring them back.”

“I hve three spider-men, two Loki’s, and two black widows at my disposal, I don’t think you wanna cross me,” Meag replies. “Not to mention Wong, Tony..”

“You’re cute, thinking you have the upper hand here,” Stephen replies. “I destroyed my entire universe, you think I can’t beat a few superheroes?”

Meag backs up, pressing a button on her bracelet, a distress signal. It should reach the compound in the next thirty seconds if she could stall him.

“W-what makes you think you can beat me?” Meag replies, her words shaky.

He laughs. “You? I’m the sorcerer supreme! You’re just a human. Your husband may have taught you the mystic arts, but you’ll never hve the power I have.”

It had been thirty seconds. She breathed a sigh of relief before looking up at the sorcerer.

“I yield,” she says, putting her arms in the air.

He grabs her wrist. “You’re going with me, where none of your friends can find us.”
