I can finally post the piece I did for the Shuwatch! Ultraman Charity Fan Zine! Wanted to draw some classic ultra kaiju for this piece, had a lot of fun with it. All proceeds go to the Ultraman Foundation, a charity organization that donates to kids in need.
WHOA. I have so many amazing suggestions in my inbox I’m not sure what to do first. I’m hoping to tackle a couple drawings today. I don’t know how you guys come up with this stuff.
In the meantime, I’d like to share some of my toy collection with you fellow Kaiju lovers, if that’s alright.
This right here is my squeaky Pigmon. He’s made of super soft vinyl and he has a squeaky thing inside of him. I snagged him on eBay for like $70. More than I wanted to pay, but I loved the face on this toy so much. I admit to loving the amazing badassery of kaijus like the ones in Pacific Rim, but the Kaiju that are slightly dopey looking will always be my favorite. That being said, I CANNOT WAIT TO ADD SOME PACIFIC RIM DUDES TO MY COLLECTION!!!
Well, even a paleonerd can’t spend ALL his time reading thick fossiliferous tomes, now can he?
Meet Pigmon, from Ultraman. Ultraman is a Japanese kaiju/kyodai hero/tokusatsu television series that is something like Godzilla meets superheroes with a dash of Star Trek. I’m primarily speaking of the original series, which first aired in 1966, and the franchise has continued in one variation or another even unto today (it’s still ongoing). I’ve slightly oversimplified the fascinating complexity of the series, but you get my drift.
Swipe to see clips from Ultraman, episode 37, “The Little Hero” to see just why I love Pigmon so much. I mean…you get it, right?
