During an archeological dig, Daera and her team find an item. A black box in every sense of the term, that remains impossible to scan, and staunchly refuses to give them any information. Now Daera is the only one still working on it, with a only a rotation left before she returns home.

But he soon discovers that his own Phajiti is not the animalistic kind of creature that the others are. His is intelligent. As he grows up, asked to keep this a secret by the Phajiti itself for unknown reason, he finds himself both aided and hindered by it, and eventually learns how to use it best, and how to live with it.
