Sex worker, podcasterandjournalist Siouxsie Q makes her New York City debut bringing her original one act musical to the Brick Theater this summer! Siouxsie Q has made quite a splash since launching her Sex Work themed Podcast “The WhoreCast” in the Fall of 2012 with the mission to humanize people in the sex industry by creating a platform for sex workers to share their art, their stories - their voices. “Through art and storytelling I hope that we can change hearts and minds and show the world that sex workers are people too…though sometimes we are also mermaids.” says Q. Capitalizing on the success of the Whorecast, Siouxsie has become a prolific writer as a regular columnist for the SF weekly and a featured writer for Ratter.com, Eros Media, and the Slixa blog.
Fish Girl is the culmination of 5 years of long distance collaboration between Miss Q and her best friend, award winning theatre maker Sean Andries out of Portland, Oregon. A fairy tale exploring themes of sex work through the lens of fantasy, Fish Girl weaves together the tale of a love struck tourist (Sean Andries) who falls into the deep end when he meets the “girl” of his dreams (Siouxsie Q). She’s half fish, half girl, half real, half dream, half in this world, half out–a fish and a bird can fall in love, but where can they build their nest?
Fish Girl includes original songs written and performed by Siouxsie Q as well as shadow play, physical comedy, antique slide projections and high drama. But perhaps the most exciting aspect of the play is that it is an insider’s look into the hopes, dreams, and fears of a sex worker and the one who loves her.
