the funniest thing ever is picturing how unlike the various Bond women companion characters, Q in the car with James would be the exact opposite. Like, he wouldn’t be erotically thrilled or terrified to the point of bloodlessness while Bond does 17 donuts and propels them off a cliff.
He’d be like bored trying to type an email on his phone not even looking up at the road as they drive vertically up a cliff while getting shot at by 50 henchpeople. He wouldnt even blink as they do a barrel roll mid air, suspended in his seatbelt upside down still typing on his phone, unbothered as his tie flies back into his face, while Bond is doing his best Chaos Agent Formula 1 stunts to keep them alive.
Number one, Q built the damn car and knows more than what it is capable of withstanding - so why would he ever worry? Number 2 - it’s just hilarious picturing him typing away bored as James is pulling the smoke switches, the barrel guns, the flaming exhaust, and like reaching over Q who is still on his phone to pull a giant ass weapon from the glove compartment as Q, annoyed, is still preoccupied trying to still send texts and get a mobile signal in the middle of like some godless desert or Siberia.
And of course, Q occasionally (still not looking up from his phone, sighing at the inconvenience, while Bond is glaring at him), lifts a finger to hit a button himself to help.
decided to post a close up of this earlier piece i did bc i still like it, it’s the first james bond one i’ve done and it was while i was making it that i realised that daniel craig’s bulldog face is going to be impossible to draw
here he is! tattooed Q in all of his glory, including (but not limited to):
- leonardo da vinci’s skull sketch (he believed that the human soul resides in the place where the three lines meet),
- the psi symbol (thank you for that amazing idea @amrtiamat!),
- the Fibonacci spiral (that’s @prismatic-bell’s great input!)
- the number VII for obvious reasons,
- the letter Q in both braille and morse code which he got after he was promoted,
- the first thirty-two numbers of pi, each year he adds another one on his birthday (he might have gotten each number he remembers if he could fit about 20 000 numbers on his body),
- a laurel wreath he got after his top surgery,
- “hello world” (the most basic computer program, most people’s beginning with coding) in Yiddish,
- d&d dice because that boy is a nerd and loves shapes,
- the testosterone molecular structure he got after starting T,
- a circuit board that interconnects all of his other tattoos,
and some more! there’s still space left on the canvas so i might just come back to this someday
both q and bond get cold during the night so the temperature in their flat is turned up impossibly high and they kept fighting over who gets to sleep with the cat so when the opportunity came to rescue another one they didn’t hesitate (both of the cats choose james anyway, the traitors)
Q is a person that takes something as big as a relationship seriously.
He understands that it might not be a big deal to a lot of people, but given the kind of life he’s living, he knows how difficult a relationship with him can get. He sees all the effort you go through and appreciates it, even if he doesn’t always know how to best put it into words.
The challenges might still be plenty if you happen to work at MI6 alongside him, but it does ease the burden a lot. His schedule makes little sense and often changes rapidly, which screws a lot of plans and dates. Q always feels guilty when he has to cancel them. He does his best to make it up to you once he finally has the time, but the guilt still remains at the back of his head.
When Q manages to secure some free time, he will do his absolute best to make everything perfect. You often meet at his apartment, which makes preparations easier.
He doesn’t mind the cooking - even finds it calming sometimes. There is a blessed simplicity at following a recipe and knowing the outcome will depend on actions you can control.
Q cleans the whole place thoroughly, which isn’t as hard as one might think. He lives with his cats, and knows them well enough to secure everything valuable or even remotely edible outside of their reach. That results in little to no garbage lying around which already helps a lot.
Q cares about you and takes the relationship seriously, which directly results in him stressing out about it on a regular basis.
Once he falls in love, he falls in deep and that leads to his stress having to find an outlet. Most of the time, that outlet becomes the cleaning.
Q is not above scrubbing every scrubbable surface in his house with twelve different detergents and reorganizing every shelf and cabinet within reach and beyond it. Just in case you got the urge to have a look at his Tupperware.
It’s not a flawless system, but it allows him to blow off some steam, and that has to count for something, right?
Q loves the days he can spend with you outside of work, regardless of what you decide to do. He loves the lazy mornings where he gets to look at you wake up slowly (even though the world’s a little blurry without his glasses on) and the evenings spent on watching nonsense on TV, buried under a warm blanket together.
He knows that the two of you form a team and that he can come to you with any problem or issue he’s facing and just talk it off his chest. Even if you can’t find the immediate solution, just the thought of you having his back and giving him your time and undivided attention means the world to him.
But even when everything goes sideways and the missions he is tasked to overlook take a sudden change for worse, or when the projects pile up and try to bury him alive, Q tries to focus on the bright sides.
He always smiles when you visit him at the lab, and does it even wider when you bring him lunch, refusing to leave until you see him eat it.
Life feels a little better when you sit on a spare chair next to him and just spend time with him while Q works on his projects. Sometimes you don’t talk for hours, but the thought of you being around feels no less comforting.
You try to go home together too, as often as possible despite your clashing and uncertain schedules. It’s a good time to slowly unwind at the metro, tuning your minds away from the problems of the day.
