That Nines was a default villain in early fandom really is just so funny like the guy just stood there.
Imo that also relates to why he and Gavin got paired together. Like yeah “minor antagonist” and “dude who doesn’t do shit” aren’t super compelling together but when you factor in the fan content it was “stock antagonist” and “stock antagonist: supreme flavour” and both of them were getting dropped into the DPD to mess with Connor at the same time. They’re eventually gonna interact!

reed900 is so completely unexplainable like yeah the entire backbone of the dbh fandom is actually two characters that basically don’t exist? where did this even come from and why
Actual explanation: Roughly, Gavin was used as a stock villain or DPD background character, Nines was used as a villain or joined Connor in the DPD, so you had them in the same space and interacting, and then the dynamic people discovered there plus them being basically the same situation as Hank and Connor (human detective who hates androids + android detective who learns emotions) but without the canon story already there so we could make it up ourselves, *plus* the fact that people usually made them “meaner” in personality which made it easier to write more extreme NSFW content with them, all rolled together to create a new ship.
