Then sing me a song.

being a famous youtuber and being a college student needs good time management, but you’re shit at that. so, fancying a boy working at the coffee shop would be out of the question, right?

“BELLE” Review: Beautiful Everything

Mamoru Hosoda’s Studio Chizu continues to prove its worldwide merit with the release of 2021 feature animation “Belle.”

It’s not surprising that the film premiered to a 14-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival.

The film stands strongly on its own and as a retelling of fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. Animation and voice acting combine for believable characters in all settings, and the visuals are stunning, too.

Fans of his film “Summer Wars” will be especially thrilled to return to a virtual world similar to OZ, but this time the virtual hero is a heroine. Teenage student Suzu joined VR community U seeking a place where she could find joy in singing again, but her enchanting songs attract more than she was prepared to face. Thankfully, Suzu does not face these challenges alone; her friends in her daily life are supportive and surprising.

Similar to “Mirai,” the film’s timeline is not linear; instead, flashbacks slowly reveal Suzu’s story and her complicated feelings toward music. The soundtrack delivers on these feelings as well; Millenium Parade, a side project of popular Japanese band King Gnu’s Daiki Tsuneda, sets the tone with opening song (above), and the bops keep coming. You may find yourself singing along by the end — if you don’t find yourself tearing up as well.
