Family: |Part 1| |Part 2|

Inspired by Smash into Pieces “Stay”

Days without Sam hadn’t been easy. In fact, they were terribly hard on your emotional and mental state. Your daughter, who was far wiser than her age, found you crying many nights. You missed your husband and your daughter missed her father. The only connection you had with the Native American was his text messages, love letters full of apology in his wish to atone for how badly he hurt you.

Lily’s questions about her father’s whereabouts grew scarce over the weeks. She missed him, he had never before been away for so long. There was no doubt in your mind that no matter what the future brought for Sam and you, he had a bottomless fountain of love for his little girl. And you always made sure she knew that.

It was almost two months later when he called you. Deciding it was time to stop moping in your own hate, you answered. The line was silent, he hadn’t expected it.
“I need to see you…”
Tears uncontrollably fell down your cheeks, but you inhaled sharply and allowed him to continue. You didn’t trust your voice to not betray the turmoil within you.
“I’ll come wherever you want me to… But I need to see you, I need to see Lily. Please…”
Licking your lips, you exhaled; “Forks. On the beach… In two days.”
“Alri-”
You hung up on him before he could fully reply, mentally unprepared for the meeting. Lily was in daycare, you were alone in the house. You had never felt so alone before, dread making you curl up on the floor. You still loved Sam so much.

You hadn’t told Lily you were going to visit Forks to see her father. Your mother’s cousin was willing to watch over her for a few hours, having a child of her own about the same age as Lily. It would keep the little girl occupied in your absence. You dropped her off with a big kiss, telling her to play nice. The road to First Beach was long and winding, the scenery peaceful. The GPS took you the long way around, getting you stuck in the mud. Hitting the steering wheel in frustration, you think what else could go wrong today. Stepping out into the mud, you sink with your sneaker even further in. Grabbing your purse, you fish through it for your phone. It starts to ring just as you grab it, with Sam’s caller ID on the screen.
“Yeah, am nearby… I think? The car is stuck in the mud.”
“I’ll find you, stay there.”
“Do I call AAA?”
“No, just wait for me.”

Sighing, you hang up and enjoy the serene silence of the forest, not having felt so at peace for a long time. Attempting to move from your spot in the mud, you realise that you can lose your shoes in the process, which frustrates you even further. It’s fifteen minutes later when you hear rustling nearby, your eyes falling on Sam and one of his friends. They’re both without shirts. A sight you had long forgotten how it made you feel when you saw Sam naked. He smirks when he sees your jaw drop slightly, but is quickly reminded of your broken relationship as you avert your gaze. He approaches you and sees you’re stuck as well.
“Need help?”
“I tried, I’ll lose my shoes.”
He rolls his eyes and wraps an arm around your torso, hoisting you into the air. His other arm goes underneath your knees to hoist you up bridal style. A surprised squeal leaves your lips, your arms going around his neck quickly.
“I’ve got you, princess.”
“T-thank you…”

Sam gently sets you down onto the forest floor and cups your cheeks, your beautiful doe-eyes on him.
“Remember the secret I told you?” You nod. “Paul’ll get your car out.”
Shifting your eyes to the noise behind Sam, they go wide in shock and awe as you watch a giant wolf lean against the car’s front bumper. Only a slight nudge and it’s back on solid ground.
“Wow… That’s… Oh wow, he’s beautiful.”
You walk past him towards the wolf with silver fur whose brown eyes look at you mindfully. Sliding a hand into his fur, you chuckle in disbelief. Sam clears his throat, jealousy evidently pouring from him.
“Oh my God, Sam… This- this is you? I mean- I mean, you’re like this too?”

You cup the giant wolf’s cheeks and you giggle as you squish them gently. His ears lower in discomfort as his eyes meet that of a jealous Alpha. You straighten your back and look at Sam with a serious expression.
“So much for our picnic…”
“Where’s Lily?”
“I left her at Laura’s house… She doesn’t know why we came to Forks.”
Glancing at the car, “wanna lead me to First Beach?”

The two of you sit on a blanket, the sun slightly peeking through the grey clouds up above. The waves softly crash onto the sand.
“So why did you want to see me?”
You hug your knees and look at him, the breeze playing with your hair.
“I… I thought you would be around forever, no matter what. I started taking you for granted. If I could turn back time and change my life, get another chance to make things right… I’d let you know, I want you to stay…”
Tears fall at the sweet revelation of his feelings, but you still don’t know what it meant for your family. You lick your lips and sniff, Sam’s bloodshot eyes looking at you regretfully.
“In my dreams, we’re still together. Everything is like one big, happy ending. But then I wake up and it’s all gone…”
“Sam… I want you to stay, too. But I can’t handle your secrets. I can’t handle the blame you put on me for escaping the life you have with us. I don’t deserve it, Lily doesn’t deserve it.”

He nods and wipes his eyes quickly, never wanting to show his vulnerable side to anyone. He moves his body sideways, closer to yours, taking your hand in his.
“I don’t deserve you, but I… I need you. And I know you need me, too. I’m asking for one more try. For our family’s sake. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”

The two of you share a chaste kiss, the kind of kiss through which all your emotions are presented. From pain to loneliness to the love between you. The love for each other, for your family, and the future that could be. Sam then explains how losing you caused his wolf to reject Emily completely, something that has never happened in the tribe’s history.
“Does that mean that your first marriage…”
“It’s annulled. You’re my only wife.”
“But I’m not your imprint… What if you find-”
His lips quiet your doubts and he smiles, “my wolf only wants you. I only want you.”
“Sam…”
“I’m so much better with you around. Stay with me.”

Sam leads you back to La Push where you informed Laura to bring Lily. You see the older woman talking to some of the other adults, Lily holding onto her leg in fear. She turns her head at the sound of the familiar engine, her eyes growing big when she sees her father.
“Daddy!”
She stumbles through grass and dirt, running towards the two of you. Sam hoists her up in a tight hug, tears falling from your eyes once more.

You’re willing to try again. If not for your sake, then your family’s.
