Although I really do struggle to understand a lot of her career and personal choices, I kind of hate seeing all the Sarah Michelle Gellar hate that “loyal fans” will spout out since they’re mad at Buffy as a character and want more funny outtakes from SMG.

These are a few really old fan comments on an article from 2004 about SMG’s disillusionment from BtVS and the violent sexual themes just after the show ended.

  • “There’s a phrase that says: don’t spit into the fountain you drink from. and that’s exectly what SMG is doing. Buffy gave her the fame as an actress, I also believe it will be her biggest acting role in her life, and still she spits in it’s face and her fans.”

Now this one’s just cruel. I won’t sink to that.

  • “shut up gellar…youre not going to be in the angel finale… so… um… so… there !”

She didn’t want to be. Not sure if lame attempt at sarcasm or if seriously telling her she won’t play Buffy again as if it’s a bad thing.

  • “Sarah is so arrogant that she thinks she is better as an actress(or actor) than everyone else ? I felt that she degraded as an actress by those remarks of hers.”

This one almost makes me laugh from the irony. Did you learn anything valuable from season 7? That was the whole topic of it; and you completely missed one of the big ideas.

Just because she wasn’t outwardly positive about BtVS does not mean she doesn’t have a profound attachment to the show and respect her colleagues and writers. If I had to cover myself in dirt every day and pretend to have sex in a crypt, I wouldn’t want to talk about it either.

The show was her life for all those years, moreso than it was for you or me and likely anyone else on the cast. I actually don’t blame her for being so distant from the fandom and hesitant to talk about it or return in another role. From what I understand, it’s always been very complex and rocky between her and Joss. Her role in the series was not a pleasant role, particularly in the later seasons. Obviously SMG isn’t Buffy, but try to think of it in Buffy terms. Acting is her job, she does it day after day, it’s not all that glamorous or fun. And people think she’s some kind of hero or role model for it.

TL;DR: You try playing an emotionally unstable, twice-dead, lusted after, preyed upon, lovelorn superhero for 7 years every day of your life. Oh yeah, and then toss in the attempted rape/abusive sex relationship for funsies. Then come back and tell all your sycophants how much you adore that role and want to do it again. How about… no.

I want somebody that looks at me the way Spike looks at Buffy. Eyes full of love and admiration, the adorable head tilt he does every time he sees a different side of her. He adores her. ❤
