What a space. The Orangery at Schönbrunn Place is one of the largest in the world (tied with Versailles). It was heated by an underfloor hypocaust system (hot air from fires below, ie Roman baths) this wing is only a small bit of it.

Palace Of The Week - Schönbrunn Palace

Located in Vienna, Austria, the Schönbrunn Palace is a rococo palace built at the end of the XVIth century. Schönbrunn is an Unesco Wolrd Heritage Site. The is one the biggest palace in the world with 1441 rooms. I’m sure you all know this palace ! It is not only the austrian Versailles but it is also where Marie-Antoinette was borned and raised. The Empress Sissi went there very often too. Many great musicians visited the imperial family in Schönbrunn such as Mozart or Beethoven. The gardens are quite similar to the Versailles gardens, but they are much smaller ( don’t forget that the Palace is inside the city ! ). You can find french gardens, little pavillons and of course the Gloriette ( second picture ). This palace is for me the symbol of a really brilliant monarchy. But it is also the symbol of Marie-Antoinette’s happy childhood, that is why this is one of the palaces I want to visit the most !

I discovered a new impressive place in Schönbrunn.

Originally called the Ruin of Carthage, the Roman Ruin stands at the foot of the wooded slopes of Schönbrunn Hill. Designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and built in 1778, the ensemble is completely integrated into the surrounding landscape as a picturesque garden feature. The fashion for picturesque artificial ruins had started before the middle of the 18th century in England but it had taken several decades for it to spread further afield.

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

During the 19th century the glazed inner hall of the Gloriette was frequently used as a dining room. A kitchen was built nearby so that food could be freshly prepared, but this was demolished around 1925. One year later the glazing was also removed. In 1945 part of the east wing was destroyed by a bomb, but was rebuilt in the years following the war. The Gloriette underwent complete restoration in 1994/95 during the course of which the central section was reglazed. It now houses a cafe.
