St Paul’s Cathedral sits on the tallest hill of London and still has quite the presence. We had a cool experience inside of seeing a stone mason chisel the name of the new bishop.

Like many of Budapest’s iconic buildings, Central Market Hall was built at the turn of the 20th century. The building was severely damaged during WWII and was not fully restored until the late 90s.

Matthias Church was originally built in the 15th century and rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. It sits at the top of Buda and contains panoramic views of Pest. It’s also called the Coronation Church and is where the historically significant Franz Joseph and Sissi were coronated.

Budapest’s Castle Hill Funicular was the second funicular in Europe. The funicular takes visitors from the banks of the Danube to Castle Hill. The original 1870 funicular was destroyed in WWII but reopened in 1986. We opted to take the hike up which featured two bridges across the track.

The Hungarian Parliament Building. Budapest was busy around the time this was built after forming their city from Buda, Pest, and Obuda in 1873. The Neo-Gothic building was inaugurated for Hungary’s 1000th anniversary in 1896 and completed in 1906….

The Shoes on the Danube Bank is another powerful memorial. The 60 iron sculpted pairs of shoes represents the 3,500 people shot into the Danube River towards the end of WWII. The victims were told to take off their shoes before being murdered…..

What a space. The Orangery at Schönbrunn Place is one of the largest in the world (tied with Versailles). It was heated by an underfloor hypocaust system (hot air from fires below, ie Roman baths) this wing is only a small bit of it.

The North Gate at Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. The Royal Pavilion was completed in the 1820s for King George IV. The eccentric summer “pleasure palace” is styled in an Indo-Islamic exterior but Chinese interior greatly contrasting the more traditional architecture in the UK at the time….

Palm House — Kew Gardens
This greenhouse opened in 1848 and was the first large scale structural use of wrought iron. Inside is wildly packed to the brim with exotic tropical plants.
