From no weaving experience to a finished merino wool/cotton cowl in 5 hours! Lots more photos and videos in stories!
I have a few Glasgow dates listed online and some local Aberdeenshire dates too if you’d like to make your own. Catching up a bit after spending yesterday in Newcastle for #Hothouse2019
As a one person business I end up doing pretty much everything, including photography! I try to take photos of my work in the environment which inspired the designs to help tell the stories of each piece. This image (of a Ripple Throw in Stonewash!) was taken on the beach in Orkney close to where my dad grew up. We were very lucky with the sunshine but did have almost gale force winds and a very excited border collie to contend with! . . #sustainablecraft #inspiredbythesea #scottishcraft #scottishtextiles #weaversofinstagram (at Birsay, Orkney, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu_xUNEgAfr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=d0ay54cxvjwk
I use every scrap of fabric and yarn at Arra Textiles! I make woolly clouds out of warp ends and wind end of cone yarn into hanks to be sold through the studio to other crafters. I’m looking forward to making a few new clouds once I’m back in the studio this spring! . . #sustainablecraft #zerowaste #ihavethisthingwithtextiles #makersmovement #handmade #scottishcraft #britishcraft https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu4pkweglX4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1o6wrsj6e5oix
Day 9 of #marchmeetthemaker ~ The story behind the name.
Arra was the name of my great grandmother, Arra MacDonald, who was born in St Margaret’s Hope and grew up by the sea on Orkney.
I wanted a name for my business that I had a connection with and that sounded vaguely Scottish but not so much that I wouldn’t be able to move one day!
My first collection was inspired by the seascapes of Orkney after numerous holidays to visit family, so it seemed fitting to use a name that would continue this legacy! . . #makersmovement #buylessbuybetter #scottishcraft #weaversofinstagram #colourmyhome #scotland #orkney #contemporarycraft (at Brough of Birsay) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuzW1VYgKbf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7fp9svrrxb42
I like to produce small collections with a range of products that go well together in each. From throws with complimentary cushions to scarves with bags and mini pouches to match. I like to use every inch of fabric I produce, right down to making tiny buttons out of the scraps so that there’s minimal wastage! . . #makersmovement #buylessbuybetter #sustainablecraft #choosewool #scottishcraft #contemporarytextiles #weaversofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BuwifOoAX9e/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gffzk1pxftdv
Day 7 of #marchmeetthemaker ~ The less glamorous side!
I’m quite lucky in that weaving is one of the less messy craft processes, apart from some fluff off the warp or a box of dropped pins every now and then! I usually work from home if I can when I get to the washing, pressing, cutting and sewing stage of making. This was a photo taken last summer when it was warm enough to work from the garden for a few weeks! ☀️ . . #contemporarycraft #scottishcraft #weaversofinstagram #buylessbuybetter #slowdesign #handwoven #makersmovement https://www.instagram.com/p/ButlXlDAT4T/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wnb47o44dfj
Since moving to the studio in Kincardine O’Neil I’ve been able to work full time on Arra Textiles. Having a permanent space that people can come to visit has made a huge difference to the business! I can demonstrate how fabric is woven on the loom and visitors can try on and buy my work. I love having visitors in the studio, so get in touch if you’re planning a trip to Scotland! . . #scottishcraft #yarnaddiction #ihavethisthingwithtextiles #studiolife #weaversofinstagram #handweaving #contemporarycraft #scotland (at Kincardine O'Neil) https://www.instagram.com/p/BurjYwrARHu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5g30srlwhp1c
One of the things I love about weaving is that you can create a pattern within a pattern. From a distance, the Ripple Throw appears to have undulating, flowing lines but when viewed closely you can see that this shape is actually created by hundreds of tiny zigzag patterns which blend together and trick the eye into seeing a curve! . . #ihavethisthingwithtextiles #scottishcraft #yarnaddiction #contemporarytextiles #weaversofinstagram #colourmyhome #simplethings #ofquietmoments https://www.instagram.com/p/BupIhu_gTBQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=185wrjrg2ezhw
Day 4 of #marchmeetthemarker - Tools and Materials
These are the tools I use everyday for weaving. Most of them used in weaving, unchanged for generations, the headphones are a more modern addition! I use all natural yarns in my practice, mainly merino wool sourced from a Yorkshire mill but I have been experimenting with some very local materials recently for an upcoming project . . #scottishcraft #ihavethisthingwithtextiles #yarnaddiction #handweaving #weaversofinstagram #toolsofthetrade #scotland #simpleandstill #ofquietmoments #arratextiles https://www.instagram.com/p/Buly93LA9TA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mcbsb9ghg2gx
