4 grams of cotton done! I estimate around 2500 yards. I’m not sure if I want to ply it. I might experiment with gelatin or cornstarch sizing and try to weave with it as singles. We shall see.

I finally finished my Harrisville Designs Shetland blanket. It has been off the loom for a while so I took the last few days to seam it up and twist the fringe. Now I think I’ll go hide underneath it for a while.

A sneak peek into the newly refurbished Arra Textiles studio!
I’ll be having a celebratory reopening weekend on the 18th/19th of May 10am - 4pm and you’re all invited!
Until then, I’ll be travelling to lots of different places including Bristol next week for our next hothouse session, France for my first proper holiday in two years, then down to visit @londoncraftweek for a few days.
With all of the travelling (and being a one person business!), orders from the online shop after tomorrow will be a little slower to be sorted and sent out for a few weeks.

Catching up a bit after spending yesterday in Newcastle for #Hothouse2019

As a one person business I end up doing pretty much everything, including photography!
I try to take photos of my work in the environment which inspired the designs to help tell the stories of each piece. This image (of a Ripple Throw in Stonewash!) was taken on the beach in Orkney close to where my dad grew up. We were very lucky with the sunshine but did have almost gale force winds and a very excited border collie to contend with!

Day 9 of #marchmeetthemaker ~ The story behind the name.

Arra was the name of my great grandmother, Arra MacDonald, who was born in St Margaret’s Hope and grew up by the sea on Orkney.

I wanted a name for my business that I had a connection with and that sounded vaguely Scottish but not so much that I wouldn’t be able to move one day!

My first collection was inspired by the seascapes of Orkney after numerous holidays to visit family, so it seemed fitting to use a name that would continue this legacy!
