Lilly Pulitzer is known as the Queen of Prep, and is synonymous with bright floral prints. The funny thing is, the brand was pretty much started as a fluke. Being that the Pulitzers owned citrus groves in Florida, they opened a juice stand in Palm Beach. Squeezing oranges created a mess, so she made a dress to mask it with the printed fabric that the brand is known for. With so many compliments on the dress, she made some for sale at the stand, and soon the dresses would be far more successful than the juice. It also didn’t hurt that one famous former classmate of Lilly’s, Jackie Kennedy Onassis was photographed in her creations, which escalated the brand’s popularity among the socialite set.
