70s Activist Lookbook

I was inspired after finding some photos of activists in the 1970s— a crucial time in feminism, the civil rights/Black pride movement, and the LGBT rights movement, with continued momentum from the past decade of the 1960s.

In light of the recent news in the U.S., please consider helping by donating to organizations working for reproductiverights.

I love this so much! Your sims look great! Long ramble about my connection to these movements and also why Roe v. Wade is important ahead.

My parents were activists in this era attending demonstrations for peace, civil rights, and women’s rights in NYC and DC. My mom once told me that during one march she was helping to run in Manhattan, it started raining and they didn’t want to end things, so she ran into a building and got garbage bags from the janitors for everyone to wear so they could continue to protest. During a large protest in DC they got hit by mustard gas and my parents ran into the nearest building (along with many others) to rinse their eyes which happened to be The National Gallery, which has this big fountain in the front hall, they were in so much pain they rinsed their eyes in it. Eventually they were able to move to bathrooms to continue rinsing. My mom was done first since she wears glasses and got less of it than my dad did and started looking around. This was her introduction to that museum. She says she’d have rather stay there and looked at the art than return to the protest, but apparently my father was insistent they get back to it.

Roe v. Wade isn’t just a decision that grants women the right to choose whether to carry a fetus to an end point (I’m phrasing it this way because not all fetuses become babies, some are miscarried and some are stillborn) it’s an integral part of our medical legal framework. In the 51 years since this decision, other laws and decisions have been made that cite this about medical privacy and bodily autonomy.

Also for anyone who thinks the fight against choice is about babies, it isn’t. It’s about control and the subjugation of women. The same people that want abortion to be illegal are the same people slashing funding to schools, Medicaid, WIC, and food stamps. They are against affordable healthcare, maternity leave, paternity leave, universal pre-school, sex ed, and contraceptives. Conversely they are also against fertility treatments such as IVF and IUI.
