Svatopluk I

Svatopluk I or Zwentibald I was the ruler of Great Moravia that attained its maximum territorial expansion in his reign. His career had already started in the 860s, when he governed a principality, the location of which is still a matter of debate among historians, within Moravia under the suzerainty of his uncle, Rastislav. Svatopluk dethroned Rastislav, who was a vassal of Louis the German and betrayed him to the Franks in 869 or 870, but in a year he was also imprisoned by them.

Having been released due to the Moravians’ rebellion against the Franks, Svatopluk joined the rebels and defeated the invaders. Although he was obliged to pay tribute to East Francia according to the peace treaty concluded at Forcheim (Germany) in 874, he was able to expand in territories outside the Franks’ sphere of interest in the following years.

Svatopluk established good relationship with the popes, thus he and his people were taken under the protection of the Holy See in 880. In matters of religion, Svatopluk wanted to appease the German clergy who opposed the liturgy officiated in Old Church Slavonic; therefore Methodius’s disciples were expelled from Moravia in 886, after their teacher’s death.

Svatopluk’s state was a loose structure of principalities and also included conquered territories. Not long after his death Svatopluk’s “Great Moravia" collapsed due to the power struggle between his sons and the intensifying Hungarian raids.

Great Moravian Empire

Great Moravia was a Slavic state that existed in Central Europe and lasted for nearly seventy years in the 9th century whose creators were the ancestors of the Czechs and Slovaks.

Great Moravia was founded when, in 833, Mojmir I unified two neighboring states by force, referred to in modern historiography as the “Principality of Nitra” and the “Principality of Moravia”.Cultural development resulted from the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who came during the reign of Prince Rastislav in 863. The empire reached its greatest territorial extent under Svatopluk I (871–894), although the borders of his dominions are still under debate.

Great Moravia was ultimately overrun by the Hungarians, who invaded the Carpathian Basin around 896.

Great Moravia left behind a lasting legacy in Central and Eastern Europe. The Glagolitic script and its successor Cyrillic were disseminated to other Slavic countries, charting a new path in their cultural development. The administrative system of Great Moravia influenced the development of the administration of medieval Hungary. Great Moravia also became a favorite issue in the Czech and Slovak romantic nationalism of the 19th century.

Photo of the Day: Leather Controller

Photographer caption: The history of Partizanske, Slovakia, and its surroundings is closely attached to the shoemaking industry, which was brought here by the famous Tomas Bata. Today, very few people outside of the region know that even though most of the production ceased years ago, there are still some companies producing shoes. This photograph is part of a series in which I was documenting individuals who work in this industry and individual parts of the production process. The worker in this portrait works in a warehouse with leather. One of the tasks he performs is the control of leather thickness as pictured in this image.
