I am So. Tired. of Fandom Purity Culture.  So. Tired.  I just went to join a discord that is about something incredibly relevant to my interests, and when I got there, I discovered that there was a “no incest” rule.  Well, that’s fine, you could say, just don’t talk about any incest ships in that server.

I mean, fine?  Except that this was for a canon that doesn’t even have any sets of major characters that are biologically related to each other?  So that means either that the mods put that rule in there for virtue signalling, or they put it in there because they are going to make arbitrarily broad definitions of what constitutes incest, or maybe both.

Oh come on, you say, it’s not that difficult to figure out what counts as incest and what doesn’t.  Except I have seen “childhood friends” counted as incest.  Except I have seen “attended the same boarding school” counted as incest.  Except I have seen “shipped with the character’s sibling in fanon” counted as incest.  This evening, someone was trying to claim that Thorki and Sylki were okay to ship but Wincest was icky and man, I wish my hands were steady enough to draw a line that fine.

But it’s not just about the incest, okay.  As soon as your discord or your event makes arbitrary rules about what content it does or doesn’t exclude, the alarm bells go off in my head.  You could be excluding something I personally find very distasteful, and I would still steer far, far away from your discord or your event. Because I don’t know why you’ve made that rule.  I don’t know how arbitrarily you’re going to be applying it, or whether your definition and my definition of the prohibited content is even the same.

So you know what? Maybe I am missing out on a lot of awesome discussions about a topic I think is really cool, and one that just got a whole bunch of new canon content to fuel the discussions.  But at the same time, at least I can be sure I’m not getting to know a bunch of people who are going to suddenly turn on me when they discover I like content they think is “icky.”

Ironically, I just had the mod of a fandom server DM me to “have a conversation” because of my Discord About Me…

Wow.

Some people think they’re always right
Others are quiet and uptight
Others they seem so very nice (nice nice nice oh-ho)
Inside they might feel sad and wrong (oh no)

Well there aren’t many things that bug me at the gym but today something finally did. I was watching a guy use the Smith machine to squat, I was like that’s cool but then I saw it, he never hit depth on his squats. I mean come on you’re using the god forsaken smith machine and you sure as hell better be able to hit depth on that thing. I just stood there in awe about what I was watching, I mean holy shit if you’re gonna use that thing then surely use it the right way.

Honestly the Ice Age megafauna of the African continent deserves as much attention and love as the Pleistocene animals of Australia, Eurasia and North and South America

There are a lot of amazing creatures that are overlooked, including late surviving sivatheres and chalicotheres, hairless mammoths, wild cattle with extreme horn lengths, giant civets, giant warthogs, giant baboons and the giant lemurs of Madagascar

That the focus is so much on especially North America, Europe and Australia, South America most of the time being only considered in the context of the faunal exchange with North America, has to be due to an eurocentric view on palaeontology

…or maybe just due to the fact that the megafauna of those continents today isn’t that interesting or even existent anymore, while Africa’s fauna is extremely spectacular even today, which makes the ice age megafauna of the other continents more interesting by contrast.

Seriously, some people’s effort they put into finding inventing “racism” and “white supremacy” wherever they go…

How far do you even have to stretch yourself to say that people’s interest over South American megafaunais“Eurocentric”?

When someone in a VtM chat tells you if you want characters who can have sex, to go play D&D not Vampire…

Edit: for the record, they specifically mentioned playing Ravenloft. A horror setting. Where the main antagonist? Is a vampire…
