This many years later, it cracks me up when I think about the corner of Stev//en Univ//erse fandom that made smutty art/fic

Because the arguments over shipping would become incredibly vicious, and I don’t just mean fourteen-year-olds who shipped Lapi//dot being dicks to Am//edot shippers (though that was certainly a thing lol), I mean people being horrifically harassed for saying things like “Pea//rl might not be 100% a lesbian*” or people telling Jas//pis shippers that they were personally responsible for domestic violence or people getting freaked out by unusual genital configurations or heat cycles or putting “but aren’t they kinda like siblings” on every piece of shippy art of Blue and Yellow Diam//ond.**

Because here’s the thing: “normal” people? People completely outside of fandom?

They thought it was weird we were making porn of characters from a “children’s” cartoon. Anything past that didn’t register. It was all the same level of “really fucking weird, and borderline uncomfortable to think about.”

Like, I saw the looks on my IRL non-fandom friends’ faces when they put two and two together that I was writing that kind of fic about Stev//en Uni//verse. That whole “well you’re not doing anything wrong,but…ew.”

They never said anything, because they’re not shitty people; and clearly some of my friends thought it was fine because they were the ones who would ask me about it, lol.

But “normies” didn’t give a flying fuck about which ships we were writing about or what genitals we gave the gems in fan art. The whole thing was bizarre to them.

Anyway, the next time a big fandom argument is blowing up, remember that we’re all just fucking weirdos and it’s fine. Just don’t treat other people like shit.

(*I am too lazy to look up the interview right now, but apparently Reb/ecca Su/gar found it to be hurtful how vicious people were about this, because to some extent Pea//rl was Reb/ecca’s self-insert, and Rebec/ca is bisexual.)
(**Literally any accusation of “but that’s like inc/est” with the gems is fucking hilarious to me, because the gems are manufactured and had zero concept of “family” until they met Ste/ven; they would have no clue what in/cest is, they don’t even have genetics, they can’t have the “raised together like siblings” thing because they pop out of the ground as adults, THERE IS NO INC/EST AMONG GEMS.Anyway Blue and Yellow argue like old marrieds, not siblings. Sheesh.)

It’s worth noting (and I have before, like, repeatedly) that a lot of the problems of the SU fandom were the unfortunate but natural result of the people who were innately drawn to not just watch the show but obsess about it.

The SU fandom was made up of mostly young people, all some combo of mentally ill, traumatized, neurodivergent, and LGBTQ+; and for many of them tumblr was their literal only social outlet, or was the only place they could openly talk about any of the above.*

But again: they were mostly young, and/or still figuring things out, and on tumblr where it’s all in the open for everyone to see and react to; and so a lot of them just took out their unresolved issues and hurts and frustrations on each other, over and over and over.

This isn’t meant to excuse anyone’s behavior. (God knows there’s usernames I still have blocked and blacklisted to hell and back.) Only explain it.

(*I’m not throwing stones here, I am multiple things on that list.)
