May 30th - Iron Fist / Lin Lie

Born in Shanghai, China, teenager Lin Lie is believed to be the great descendent of the legendary hero of Chinese lore known as Fu Xi.  Lin’s father had been an archeologist who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.  Prior to his disappearance, Lin’s father had gifted Lie a sword propertied to have belong to the first mythical emperor of China.

Not long thereafter, young Lin was attacked by demonic like creatures and he found that the sword moved on its own accord so to defend him.  Lin was sought out by the accomplished demon hunter, Ji Shuangshuang, who explained to Lin that the seals containing the malevolent entity known as Chiyou had been weaken thus unleashing his demon army.  Furthermore, as the descendent of the heroic Fu Xi, it was now Lin’s responsibility to use the sword of Fu Xi to put things right and defeat the forces of Chiyou.

Shuangshuang trained Lin in the use of the sword and the teenager would go on to become ‘The Sword Master,’ setting out to take on Chiyou’s demons and find his lost family.  The Sword Master ended up allying with The Agents of Atlas during the War of The Realms event.  Following this, The Sword Master accompanied The White Fox to Korea to hunt down the demonic Kumiho.  The ensuing battle resulted in the Sword of Fu Xi being shattered into dozens of pieces and Lin himself appeared to perish.

Gravely injured, Lin was rescued by the monks of K’un-Lun who brought him to their secluded monastery to try to save his life.  A number of the shards of the broken sword had become embedded in his hands and wrists and he was near death.  The dragon, Shou-Lao, chose to bestow its chi onto Lin, saving his life and granting him the power and title of the Iron Fist.  These powers were augmented by the sword shards embedded in Lin’s hands and forearms.

As the new Iron Fist, Lin has set out to discover the remaining pieces of the sword of Fu Xi and put an end to the threat posed by Chiyou.  Herein he has teamed up with the fellow Iron Fist, Danny Rand.

Martial artists must possess humility and selflessly serve others…. Bushido devoid of this spirit of humility is nothing more than violence.” -Shihan Ōtake Risuke

He is the master of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu -  Japan’s oldest and most traditional sword school - considered the pinnacle of classic Japanese martial arts. It was founded in the Muromachi era (1336-1573).
It is an amazing privilege that warriors can learn from centuries of unbroken Japanese tradition, and also that they have opened their doors to share with the rest of us.

The clip is from a full movie called ‘Art of the Japanese Sword’ by Empty Mind Films, that came out in 2010- available to watch on Youtube for under $5.

Thanks so much to Marc S. for sharing this with me!
