The music played through the phone’s speakers. You stood in front of a full-length mirror that belonged to your sister’s friend, Maddy Perez. You bought it a few years back and hung it up behind your bedroom door.

Your apartment wasn’t anything special, two bedrooms, one and a half bath, kitchen. You had what you needed, and more importantly, what Flynn needed.

Being a single mom to a bouncing boy by 17 wasn’t in your bingo slip for your life. And like every stereotype, Flynn Sylas’ dad wasn’t around for him. Neither was the family of your son’s father. You, however, wasn’t as lucky.

After being hid away for ten long months, your best friend Kat made the executive decision for you to go to a party.

“But who’ll watch Flynn?” You asked, turning around. “My mom.” Kat answered, putting her hair into twin pigtails. “KK.” You looked at her, crossing your arms.

“(Nick Name), you look hot. And no offense, your social skills are practically dead by now.” She rolled her eyes at your ‘mom stance’.

“I don’t like passing my baby off.” You narrowed your eyebrows. “You’re not passing him off.” Kat shook her head. “You’re looking at it all wrong. You’re gonna be 18 in two days! And for the whole year you were either pregnant, or being mommy. Be a teen for just a couple hours.” Kat put her hands on your waist.

“Make some bad decisions. I promise, Nate won’t be there. You gotta remember that you were someone before mommy.” Kat pouted. “You don’t need to say his name with so much hatred.” You laughed a little, shaking your head.

“I don’t? He left you with a baby at 16 and pretty much just pays you to be quiet.” Kat tucked some stray hair behind your ear before fixing your lash. “More so Cal’s decision, but it is what it is. Flynn is taken care of.” You quickly added in a bad habit you picked up, justifying abusive actions.

“Come onnnn… live a little. Elliot’s gonna be there.”

“The junkie Elliot Jules fucked while with Rue?” You asked. “Sounds like a totally uncomplicated decision I totally need in my life.” You added, grabbing Kat’s hand. “KK. I love you, so much.” You kissed her knuckles. “But Flynn shouldn’t have someone temporary.”

“He’s sober now, and he’s looking for a girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend, not step-son.” You interjected.

“Just meet him, I promise.”

“Jules ain’t fucking him anymore?” You narrowed your eyebrows as you pulled back from her touch. “I promise!” She laughed.

You sighed, and nodded. “Okay. Okay! I’ll say hi.”

Your head jerked to the fussing in the room next to yours. “Flynn’s up.” You said, walking to his room.

Kat Followed behind you. “Aunt KK wants baby time.”

While she wasn’t a baby person overall, she certainly loves your son.

“Hi sweetpea.” You cooed as you picked up the red faced fussy baby. “Huh, mark your calendars. He woke up dry.” You kissed his cheek as Kat plucked him from your arms.

“When’s the party?” You asked. “An hour or so.” Kat responded, walking over to Flynn’s car seat. “Let’s go now, because I know you’ll spend the next thirty minutes talking everything over with my mom.”

“Ha. When you’re right, you’re right.” You shrugged, watching Kat strap your child in.

The music poured through the speakers as Kat pulled you through the crowd. “Take a shot!” She told you, handing you a plastic solo cup. “Fuck it.” You said, grabbing it and leaning your head back to throw the liquor down.

You made a noise as you attempted to not gag. After not drinking for almost two years, your tolerance for the taste was gone.

“Gotta train that taster.” Kat teased. “Shut up.” You laughed, pushing her a little. Your eyes moved down as you looked for Fezco.

The ginger sat on the couch, leaning back to watch his smoke drift into the air. “I got to say hey.” You said, pushing through the crowd.

“The king let you out for the night?” The dealer asked, drole on his words. “Aha, yea. King Flynn.” You responded, crossing your arms. “You alright, ma?” Fez asked, his blue eyes meeting yours.

“Yea.” You nodded. “It’s a little awkward. I’m anxious I’ll run into him.” You shrugged, standing next to him.

Your friendship with Fezco O'Neill started between two entrepreneurial grandmothers. While you weren’t as involved as Fez, you definitely knew Fez since you two were itty bitty.

“As long as I’ve known you, he should be scared of runnin’ into you.” Fezco laughed, putting the blunt out before placing it on his ear.

“You’re sweet Fez.” You pushed him, before smiling. “I’m gonna go roam.” You said before walking outside.

You hummed to the music as you watched the sea of people.

You leaned against the house’s wall.

“What’s a pretty place doing with a girl like you?” A voice cut through your thoughts. “Huh?” You asked, narrowing your eyebrows at the confusion he caused.

“I said that wrong.” He cleared his throat before sticking his hand out. “Elliot.” He said.

“(Name).” You shook his hand a little.

“Kat told me about you.” Elliot informed, his hand falling to his side. “How much did she tell you?” You asked, narrowing your eyebrows a little.

“Not too much. Single, nice butt, pretty, nice.” He answered. “She left out mom.” You added. “Mom?” He asked, narrowing his eyebrows. “Mom.” You repeated before adding “I have a son.”

“Oh.” He nodded. “That’s cool. Never dated a milf before.” He smiled at you. You scoffed, fighting back a smile. “Milf, that’s the first time I’ve gotten that.” You looked at him.

“I’m completely blowin’ it, aren’t I?” He asked, laughing a little. You shook your head. “Nah, not many 17 year old milfs in the area. At least, not since I last checked.” You smiled, nudging him gently.

“Well, at least I’m not blowin’ it… Kat told me you’re a planner. You like weighing your decisions.” Elliot leaned against the wall next to you. “Yea. Planners can be a name for it.” You half joked.

“How’re you feelin’ about this decision?” He asked.

“This decision?” You responded, eyebrows narrowing at the boy with face tattoos.

“Yea. Meetin’ me.” He explained, making a vague gesture to himself with one hand.

“For what I can say now, meeting you is a complicated decision.” You started. “There’s a lot of baggage attached to me.” You looked at him.

“Everyone has baggage.” Elliot said, a little laugh escaping him.

“Baby daddy baggage for one.” You looked over your shoulder. “I went through a lot, and you’re gonna have to prove that you’re serious and actually want a long-term thing before I even juggle the idea of bringing you around Flynn.” You looked back at him.

“Shit. Kat warned me you’re a straight shooter. I like seeing that she’s tellin’ the truth.” He paused.

“My baby daddy isn’t a good person. He did things, I don’t want to go through some more bullshit. I’m giving you your first out now.” You grabbed Elliot’s chin between your thumb and index finger. “I don’t want either of us getting hurt, and I sure don’t want my son getting attached to someone who’ll leave.”

“I’m not takin’ any outs. I don’t do that shit anymore.” Elliot’s hand grabbed yours that held his chin and moved out from your, honestly limp, grip. “There’s somethin’ about you that’s different. You’re nothing like the girls here, (Name), any dude’d that leave you is a fuckin’ idiot. Let yourself be happy.” Elliot tucked a hair from your ear.

“If you wanna take the out, just know I won’t give up still.” He said. “You were someone before you were a mommy, I want to be able to help you find that person again. But obviously I know your son comes first, which I’m totally chill with waiting until you’re ready.”

You shook your head a little. “You’re sweet Elliot.” You smiled. “Get my number from Kat.” You winked. “I’m gonna get something to drink. I hope to see you before the party’s over.” You kissed his cheek, leaving a ( color ) lipstick stain.

You turned around, and walked inside. Dodging through the swarm of people, you attempt to push down the smile.

Your body collides into the back of someone taller than you. “Fuck, I’m sorry.” You said, moving to the side.

“Hey, (Nick Name), if you’re here, who’s watching Flynn Sylas? I’d hope someone trusted.”

Nathaniel Fucking Jacobs.
