There is no denying that Kanye West is a genius producer with a list of albums ranging from The College DropouttoYeezus. We never know what to expect when he drops a new album. All we can rely on is his consistency to evolve as an artist. I respect Kanye’s capability to be vulnerable and honest without hesitation. He has no fear when it comes to his art and that’s what will make him legendary.
The Life of Pablo reminds me of Kanye’s latest album Yeezusbecause it’s more of an art piece than a label production. Just like Yeezus, some won’t understand the album and some will appreciate its courage to test the limits of music. In today’s age, where most of the music out all sounds identical, it’s refreshing to listen to an album with an alternating tracklist.
The Life of Pablo still holds the traditionally explicit auto tune sound that Kanye is known for, but also incorporates gospel tones as heard in “Low Lights” and “Ultralight Beams.” The album provides us with a quick glimpse inside of Kanye’s mind as he talks about various events in his life including his mom passing, his accident, and becoming a father. We get to see the egotistic and vulgar side that we’re used to when he talks about him and Ray J being friends if they didn’t like the same bitch. He then exposes the side that worries about his family and wants to be liberated in the tracks “Wolves” and “Father Stretch My Pants Pt. 2.” The same album has him rapping like the old Kanye in “No More Parties in L.A.” in case we thought he couldn’t write like that anymore. The Life of Pablo reminds us that Kanye is a multidimensional artist.
The Life of Pablo is a reminder of Kanye West’s relevancy to the music world and will definitely influence the sound of 2016.
