The Dream Daughter

by Diane Chamberlain

I have been trying to pin down exactly what is so unique about this genre-crossing piece. As a time travel story, it bleeds from sci-fi into a domestic tale into a historical reexamination. It is a reinvented Time Traveler’s Wife with a mother/ daughter relationship at its center, steeped in the conflicted history of Vietnam.  I read it over the course of a few afternoons, but now, weeks later,  I think I’ve finally teased out what is so insightful and perspective-altering about The Dream Daughter:

Itbegins in the past.

So many time travel stories begin in the present and the characters revisit the past or leap to the future. In this, our protagonist’s present is the past and as a result, we as readers are immersed in an entirely different storytelling perspective.

This is one for which the cover doesn’t feel quite right for some reason, so don’t judge this book by its cover.  It’s deeper, more nuanced and more timeless than the image suggests.

Diane Chamberlain plots twists and reveals across the span of half a century. Surprising, unexpected, and thoroughly enjoyable, The Dream Daughter will appeal to light historical fiction and light sci-fi fans alike.

no one asked for this buthear me out guys,

i was so looking forward to watching “the time traveler’s wife’ hbo series since it was announced because i love sci-fi and most importantly you know THEO. JAMES, theo james playing a tragic character, theo james playing a character with genetic disorder that makes him involuntarily time travel, naked whumpy-looking theo james. you get my drift

anyways, i watched it today and i say this with utmost restraint, the pilot episode was very hard to watch. first of all, i thought this show was supposed to have some tragic undertone and look gritty. i mean i haven’t read the book, but what i gathered via online, it’s a romance sci-fi story and the main character goes through traumatic stuff. instead, the ep 1 gave off cutesy vibes lol. didn’t look remotely sci-fi.

secondly, it has an ick-factor for me: the concerning early-relationship storyline. the fact the main character henry goes back in time where he meets his future wife, clare, as a very young girl. and it’s implied that the very young clare subsequently starts having fantasies about him as a sexual partner. yeah, like i said, icky! that threw me way off.

episode 1 just seemed odd to me. i might be wrong and it might get better when the other episodes come out. for now, that’s how i feel. all i know is they foreshadowed theo james’ henry will be getting whumped in the coming episodes. so if the whole show ends up being an unwatchable train wreck at least theo james’ character getting whumped will make up for it (the whump better be there) *fingers crossed*

I want to watch The Time Traveler’s Wife (HBO) but the reviews seem to say it’s not that good. But I can’t tell if that’s because people lack nuance and can’t understand that some media is intentionally supposed to make you uncomfortable without recourse or explanation…and just because it does make you feel that way doesn’t mean it actually problematic… or if the writing and acting are actually that bad

I won’t ever leave you, even though you’re always leaving me.

Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler’s wife

I just thought of something. Future Henry always knows what happened to him in the past… so the future version of him already KNEW he was going to get caught s—— himself off and he did it anyway… I know there’s the whole “we can’t change the future or past” thing but I still find it funny they both look shocked because surely one of them remembered that earlier that same year, since they’re both the same age, they got caught doing this in the other position… XD
