A Tree Frog Treks camper meets an Alligator Lizard found in #sanfrancisco yesterday!
Alligator lizards are native to the west coast and use their long bodies and tails to move in a snake-like fashion through the undergrowth. Also like snakes, they shed their skins in a large piece instead of many small patches like most lizards. Very cool find!

Mr. Science shows campers the amazing By-the-Wind Sailor, a common find a #oceanbeach and along the shores of the Pacific! Like the Portuguese Man-o-war, it is not one organism but a colony of hydroids, tiny relatives of sea anemones. They drift along the ocean’s surface, being blown by their “sail.” While their tentacles are usually harmless to humans, some people may react differently.

We’ve successfully helped many many kids understand that cockroaches can be cute, sweet creatures - of the thousands of cockroach species, only about five are considered pests! They’re also incredibly important animals, serving as both decomposers and food sources throughout the world!
What do you think, can adults also learn to appreciate this oft-maligned animal, or are only kids open-minded enough? This Tree Frog Trekker agrees with Bob Pyle that the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach can be “quite delightful—sort of like a mouse with a roach suit on.”
