Sarosh’s vision tunnels at the sight of the first ruby drop, his breath quickening. He unconsciously leans forward. Blood spills over Ismail’s arm into a waiting vessel, rich and stark against the polished metal, the same deep red as pomegranate seeds.
There’s a heat coming off it. It’s tempting, comforting, even. It begs to be enjoyed and savored. Like bathwater. Sarosh wants to dip his hand in it, feel it in the grooves of his fingerprints, suck each and every finger clean.
“Well?” Ismail says, impatient. The wad of cotton pressed against the incision is stained and already starting to brown at the edges. The tourniquet lies on the floor between them like a discarded snake skin. Ismail watches him. “Is that enough?”
It’s not. In truth, it’s never enough.

I’ve been talking about it long enough, so here’s a little sneak preview of the piece I wrote for @carpenoctemzine,Moment of Bliss! If you like cold war era lesbian vampires, then my story might just be for you!
Already the faint holes left against the man’s pulse are closing. A heart attack, it would seem. Collapsed on the floor of his own run-down motel room. Tragic, really, and just too bad for the Shtatnikithat he died with all of that precious information he’d thought so safe inside his bald little head. What a fool, she thinks with a faint grin.
She turns to leave, and that is when she hears it, the faint gasp — clear as a bell — as if it were uttered just beside her ear. Wheeling, she turns and scours the room, her sharp eyesight flashing in the moonlight, her senses stretched out like a blanket to catch the faintest scuttle of rat beneath the floors.
Nothing.
That was impossible.
Not a single heartbeat in the room, not a breath, not a whiff of scent. They were alone, just she and the corpse of her dinner, just as she had been sure they had been when she’d entered.
And yet —
“Did you just kill that man?”

Carpe Noctem: Vampires Through the Ages is an anthology of original art, comics, and historical fiction about vampires around the world. I’m contributing a short story about a Heian-period vampire titled “The Kumo Diary,” which follows a Meiji-era scholar’s assistant who discovers an old manuscript that she initially mistakes as a lost chapter from The Tale of Genji. It was a lot of fun to write about Heian-period demonic women, and I also enjoyed doing research in order to put together the Meiji-period frame story. I’m very proud of the twist at the end, and I hope readers will get a pleasant chill from the gradual transformation of the two narrators’ distinctive voices.
