Hey, all! As some of you may know, I collaborate on the Critical Hit Show Comic with the fantastic Eric Fell, the creator of the show, the world, and the writer of the comics (I only draw them for him). Well, recently I was able to sit down and hash out a design for the Spitz ‘n Ass Tavern Sign, and I went ahead and printed them on a butt-load of 1.5″ buttons:

image

They look so good, y'all.

They will be on sale for $1 each at theCritical Hit Show at the Rio TheatreinVancouver, BC this coming Wednesday, May 25th, and at the shows thereafter, too.

BUT WAIT, IT GETS BETTER!

Would you like one of these buttons? Are you going to VanCAF this weekend? Well, how would you like it if I said you could get one for FREE?!

That’s right! Come find me at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival this Saturday and Sunday, May 21st-22nd, at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Vancouver, BC, and I will give a button away FREE to the first 25 people to tell me they’re fans of the Critical Hit Show! VanCAF is 100% free to attend, so do come on by!

How will you find me? Well, that’s the tricky part. I’m not tabling this year, but I will be wandering around the halls, going to almost every panel, bothering my friends who ARE exhibiting, and spending all my money. So yeah, the challenge is in finding me!

I will look something like this:

image

I will definitely be wearing that hat, that plaid shirt, and carrying that bag. So yeah, tap me on the shoulder, or call out “Hey, you!”, or use my name even, and I will totally stop and say hi and give you a button if you’re a fan of the show or of the comics. I’ll do my best to be walking around and visible when I’m not sitting in panels! Feel free to @ me on twitter if you’re looking for me and can’t find me: @RheallArt

The free buttons will be limited to the first 25 people, first come, first serve. One button per person. (And if you’ve never heard of the Critical Hit Show before, or never read the comic and couldn’t care less, please leave these buttons to those who have, and do! Be a good sport, and all that.) VanCAF is such a fantastic festival, so please do consider going if you like comics and are able to. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

We are looking for a dedicated group of individuals interested in volunteering at VanCAF this year. Volunteering at VanCAF is a great way to get hands-on event management experience, as well as the opportunity to meet other people who love comics, and help out the folks who create them. Volunteers are an essential part of operating VanCAF, the show would fall apart without them!

If you’re interested, or know someone who is, please check out the sign up form on our website.

Comic creator Julia Kaye will make her first appearance at VanCAF this year, as a featured guest!

Instead of a traditional written diary, Julia Kaye has always turned to art as a means of self-reflection. So when she began her gender transition, in 2016, she decided to use her popular webcomic, Up and Out, to process her journey and help others with similar struggles realize they weren’t alone. Julia’s poignant, relatable comics honestly depict her personal ups and downs while dealing with the various issues involved in transitioning—from struggling with self-acceptance and challenging societal expectations, to moments of self-love and joy. Her new book Super Late Bloomer both educates and inspires, as Julia faces her difficulties head-on and commits to being wholly, authentically who she was always meant to be.

The Salt & Honey Podcast is Coming to VanCAF!

Salt & Honey is a podcast hosted by two friends who happen to be full-time cartoonists, Sloane Leong andLeslie Hung. It features unique insights into the creative process behind comics, interviews with other creators, and insider perspectives on the comics industry.

Sloane Leong is a self-taught cartoonist, artist, and writer currently living in Portland, Oregon. She explores themes of survival, displacement, relationships, spirituality, identity and mental illness through literary vehicles like science fiction, horror, adventure and slice-of-life genres. Her work focuses on exploring silenced narratives from marginalized communities and people of color, to connect personally with individuals through storytelling, with an aim to cultivate a kinder, more understanding future. She is currently working on a scifantasy series from Image Comics called PRISM STALKER and a graphic novel for First Second called A Map to the Sun.

Leslie Hung is a comic artist and writer from Southern California. She created and is currently drawing the Image Comics series Snotgirl with Bryan Lee O'Malley.

VanCAF is proud to have both hosts as featured guests for 2018. Leong and Hung plan to co-host a live recording of one of @saltandhoneypod’s episodes in front of an audience at VanCAF as part of our programming!

The cartoonist known as Boum @boumdraws will be traveling from Montreal for her first guest appearance at VanCAF! Her slice of life comics give a charming glimpse into the world of parenthood.

After ten years of studies and work in animation, Boum tried making comics and became completely addicted. She is mostly known for her Boumeries, a journal comic, and for A Small Revolution. Her comics are shortlisted for many prizes across the years, including the Bedelys, Expozine Awards, Joe Shuster Awards and Ignatz Awards. She is currently working on several comic projects at once, while also illustrating kids’ books.
