im so tired of certain commodities being labeled vegan. they’re objects. they cant hold ideologies.

agave is not vegan honey. plastic leather is not vegan leather. quinoa is not vegan. high-emissions out-of-season fruits and veggies are not vegan.

these products are not mandatory to practicing veganism. there is no evidence that vegans consume more of these commodities per person than non-vegans. critiques of these commodities are not valid critiques of veganism.

calling commodities vegan allows people to say “if this bad thing is vegan, then veganism bad” which distracts from the moral and practical urgency of veganism in a world spiraling towards climate collapse.

Just a note (not trying to take away from your post really just adding something)

Where I live the word vegan on a product means there’s no accidental animal inside the product. yk like a dead mouse in juice

I actually never thought about someone using vegan as a label on a certain product against veganism a whole to be a possibility, so thank you for making this post

hey! i think i get your meaning. i personally think it would be better if “vegan food” was instead labeled plant-based. people seek plant-based foods for a variety of reasons, not just for animal rights. vegans are just one, very small group that consumes plant-based foods. i think labeling foods plant-based instead of “vegan” could reduce misunderstanding and mis/disinformation around veganism. its a bit semantic, but in my opinion it’s incredibly important and worthwhile to be precise with language.

I’d add that most of these products are not called vegan by the producers because they did not intend for them to be consumed by only vegans.

Plastic leather is usually called vinyl leather or pleather, agave is called just that, quinoa, fruit, these things are not labeled vegan by the grocery stores or the manufacturers they are not specifically intended for vegans.

They get called vegan when someone with a very narrow understanding of veganism wants to make arguments against it.

True vegan products, that are labeled vegan like vegan leather produced from waste products or sustainably harvested cork, vegan sausages made from beans, or vegan butter made with oat milk and sustainable oils are in my experience usually designed with environmental considerations in mind as the manufacturers know environmentalism is important to vegans.
