Discoroma Liquid Incense, 1976

Adjusted for inflation, one bottle of these disco-themed poppers would cost $30 by today’s standards (not that it would be legal to buy today, as these drugs were outlawed in the United States in 1990).

Feeling the cold? Perhaps you need an Avondale Heating Stove.

“Leaving the Wreck” and “In Winter Quarters” trade cards published by J.H.Bufford’s Sons in the late 19th century. Both of these items may be found in the Charles E. Brownell Collection of Architectural and Decorative Ephemera (M439), Special Collections and Archives, James Branch Cabell Library.

With all the excitement surrounding the discovery of Ernest Shackleton’s ship “Endurance,” we thought we’d share these icy trade cards again, though we’re not certain when they were printed or what shipwreck they depict.

In January, 1915, the Endurance became trapped in ice, which began to slowly crush the wooden ship.  On Oct. 27, 1915, Shackleton gave the order to abandon the Endurance, and one month later the ship sank into the Weddell Sea.

Edgar F. “Steve” Schilder (1888-1963) was an American cartoonist and editor who worked at a number of newspapers around the United States. His pen name “Steve” came from the black cat that appeared in many of his cartoons.

The Adventures of Eva, Pora and Ted, was published by the Evaporated Milk Association in 1931, four years after Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight.
