Monaco Grand Prix 1930. Robert Falcucci.

31 ¼ x 47 3/8 in./79.3 x 120.3 cm

It’s a red, red, ripping and roaring sunset in this gripping design by Falcucci. Created for the second running of the Monaco Grand Prix, it’s arguably one of the best created for the event. (The first Grand Prix was just announced with text; this the first image done for the competition.) We don’t know the maker of this blazing white beast of a racecar, but René Dreyfus took the checkered flag that year in his Bugatti T35B.

American Crescent Cycles. 1899. Frederick Winthrop Ramsdell.

42 ¾ x 62 7/8 in./108.6 x 159.8 cm

Ramsdell studied at the Art Students League of New York, then left for Paris, where his work was shown at the Paris Salon between 1891 and 1898. This was the sweet spot for the French advertising poster, of course, and especially the work of Eugene Grasset, whose style Ramsdell appropriates in spectacular style.

Littlehampton. William Gwennet.

24 3/8 x 39 1/8 in/62 x 99.5 cm

The serene composure of this fin-de-siècle Englishwoman reflects the lovely holidays on offer around Littlehampton, a tourist harbour town in West Sussex, England, on the English Channel. “Exhilarating and bracing air, with the beautiful River Arun affording good fishing and boating,” and an “extensive sandy beach, with fine common adjoining the promenade and jetty,” are all promised here, along with “Arundel Castle within easy distance,” “Angmering, and its picturesque village,” along with “excellent cricket and lawn tennis grounds. Also golf links.” Train service departs from London Bridge from 9:40am onward. The lady’s pup is expectant.

La Dolce Vita. 1959. Giorgio Olivetti.

55 x 77 ½ in./139.5 x 196.7 cm

One of the greatest films – and one of the greatest film posters – of all time, Olivetti’s gorgeous and rhapsodic two-sheet extravaganza features Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni looking gorgeous. This Olivetti poster was printed in 1959, for the original Cannes Film Festival release, and as such is quite rare!

Available at auction February 25, 2018.

Poster Advertising Herman Miller’s ‘Modular Sofa Group” Seating Range by Ray Wilkes. Dated 1976.

“Nicknamed the Chiclet, after the candy-coated gum, this modular sofa group’s components could be taken apart, rearranged, interspersed with table pieces, and screwed back together using a simple Allen wrench. In this poster, the rainbow of colors serves as a shorthand for consumer choice and customization.”
