Female Lead and Male Lead are both members of the student council at a prestigious school. She’s super rich and well trained; he’s a commoner super genius with top grades. Together they battle against one another in the war of love! They both want a confession, but neither wants to be the first one to give it.

I was a bit worried when this show opened up with an explanation of love as a power-struggle where someone always comes out on top while using visuals of a woman using a guy only for his money, but once that was out of the way, I found myself unexpectedly charmed. These are just two prideful morons too afraid to admit their own feelings for each other. Instead, they play mind games and tricks to try to set up situations that will force the other to confess to them.

Basically, they are both morons. Throw in the secretary as an unexpected integer in their calculating schemes, and you’ve got some great chemistry. Sometimes they both come off pretty shallow, but when you remind yourself they’re just a couple of morons with crushes they are too stuck up to act on, it’s fine. I don’t know if this dynamic can work for an entire season, and romantic comedies don’t tend to hold my attention - but I’m curious to give it a go.

Ah, I forgot to mention the directing in this show is great. I wasn’t expecting so many visually interesting scenes from such a premise. That alone could give it reason to hook me longer than I expect.

Will I watch Episode 2? I am shocking myself by saying: Yes!

My Roommate is a Cat

MC is an author with social anxiety who wants nothing more than to be left alone with his craft. He hates having others intrude on his stories, preferring his own imagination and ideas to fuel them. He meets a hungry kitty and is inspired to write, so takes the kitty home with him.

I think my roommate summed this one up the best when she said “wholesome” after the OP finished running. This is just a very sweet show about a man who doesn’t take care of himself and a cat who lived a harsh life trying to make sure he does. It’s very cute.

Not that it doesn’t have flaws though. The first episode’s tone feels like it’s struggling between comedy and drama, especially in the first half. If this were a comedy, MC’s distance towards other people because they ‘spoiled a book he was reading’ would fit nicely, but because this isn’t really a straight up comedy, we also have to throw dead parents into the mix. The first half of the episode we experience the story through the MC’s POV and he’s incredibly… boring. Even when we rehash the same events a second time through the cat’s POV, it’s better. They at least have some personality! 

Maybe this tonal dissonance is purposeful - since we are dealing with two different characters clashing together, but it ends up feeling like a balancing act they didn’t quite get right all the same.

Quick heads up that this show deals in some small ways with the concept of loss. There’s one flashback scene that implies a member of the kitty’s family passed away as well.

Will I Watch Episode 2? Yup! Kitty cute.

Meiji Tokyo Renka

MC has always been able to see and talk to ghosts, something that pretty quickly alienated her from her peers. Overtime she’s grown increasing withdrawn as others whisper about her abilities behind her back. Turns out those ghosts that she was talking to were actually the ghosts of Hot Men from Meiji Era Tokyo, and when she gets roped into a street performer’s act to make her disappear in a box, she gets taken back to that era. Her memories are fuzzy, but there’s Hot Men abound to take care and dote on her after she gets hit by a carriage. One of these Hot Men is a total creeper who decides, well you’re my fiancee now and you belong to me.

Sweet!

Oh, all the Hot Men seem to be famous artists from Japanese History or something. An author, artist, playwright, doctor????

Look. I’m not going to pretend I have good taste. This was a disposable mess of otome tropes and BAD PACING (like real bad pacing), but all these Hot Men are morons and I live for that. Plus, look at this cute monocle boy!

Fiancee red head can really go perish in a dumpster though. He’s skeevy and the MC seems to get that vibe too, considering most of the time she’s looking at him in confusion.

Will I watch Episode 2? I’ll give it a go. (and then peter out three episodes in.)

WATATEN! An Angel Flew Down to Me

I didn’t make it to the end of this, just past halfway. But I’m done.

MC falls for the new friend of her little sister. It’s not clear in what manner she falls for her, be it she just really wants to be friends, or just really finds her endearing or cute. idk! i don’t care! I’m out. As soon as she started taking photos of the younger girl in her cosplay from low angle shots, I noped on outta here.

Which sounds hypocritical from someone who watched all of Happy Sugar Life, but that show was playing this awful set up as horror. This is comedy. and I don’t find it funny.

The Price of Smiles

The princess of some kingdom has turned 12 and must now do things like Public Speaking and Make Big Decisions and … well not be Queen because they still call her Princess, but whatever. People doubt our little princess, but her childhood friend supports her and she supports him and they both support smiling. So that’s dandy. Except that their kingdom is probably at war, something no one is telling her, but it’s hinted at enough that even I, who was not paying attention, could figure that out.

Also there was a huge mecha battle. Because I guess this is a mecha anime.

I had trouble focusing on this. I’m not really sure what the hook is. The only battle was a training battle/bet. The princess showed she’s smart enough to handle that, so I’m going to guess in the future she’ll get involved with the war things despite what all the old people want. But eh… I still don’t see what the draw is.

Which means this is likely not for me.

Will I watch Episode 2? Nah.

The Rise of the Shield Hero

I knew people were mad at this one before going in, but I didn’t know why.

Now I’m mad at it too! Wonderful how that works.

Anyway, this starts out as your typical Isekai. Otaku dude is browsing the library for a new LN, but then gets sucked into another world while flipping through a book. Turns out he’s now one of four Chosen Ones brought from another world to save this one. Then bad stuff happens and he becomes an Angry Boy. We’ll get there.

At first, I was angry at this series for the reasons of - hey this actually has some interesting twists on the genre and it’s so obviously going to waste them! Having four people teleported into this world was pretty neat. The fact that they all come from different parallel universes of our modern world was pretty cool too. But the differences between those worlds were very superficial and pointless. It didn’t seem to matter much. Having four different dudes teleported from four very VERY different Japans could have been neat!

Then I was mad about the game menu systems in a world that came from a book. (though I guess that’s explained away by the fact that the other three guys were teleported here by games. But why can’t mr. shield have a more book friendly interface? huh? HUH?)

Then the real reason everyone is mad at this show rolls on down. SPOILERS Female character who decided to side with poor, useless, shield hero turned out to be backstabbing him, claims he tried to sexually assault him, steals all his stuff, and turns the entire kingdom against him. And thus Angry Boy is born and the true story of one scorned man’s Rise to become the Shield Hero born alongside him.

Huh. I’m not really going to go into why that sort of plotline is incredibly damaging, but it is! This show had nothing going for it before it reached that point, and now I basically don’t want to touch it ever again.

The Promised Neverland

Here we go. Another season of anime. I’m starting on one that I was looking forward to quite a bit, having heard nothing but good things about the manga it’s adapting. Does it live up to that hype in this first episode?

Yes. Yes it does.

The Promised Neverland is, so far, about a bunch of kids who live at an orphanage. They live a pretty simple life, most of what we see them doing is playing tag in these huge fields. There’s also some academic tests they do, so there’s clearly an education system here too under the education of “Mom.” But nothing ever seems right. There’s something very off about the whole setup.

That’s what this first episode does best: suspense. Between the imagery of bars and the children’s own discussions of the outside world, you’re always left with the impression that something is about to go horribly wrong, but you’re not really given any details to know how or why. Once we do get to the meat of what’s going horribly wrong, the scene is wonderfully played out and shows the story is capable of still being suspenseful even when its cards are on the table.

Even as things can be a bit predictable (like it’s easy to guess what’s in the back of that wagon the second you see the wagon on screen), the show handles the characters, their expressions, and the camera in wonderful ways to make it engrossing all the same.

I think I made a mistake starting with something this strong right off the bat, but I’m really looking forward to where this story goes!
