My piece for week 4 of Cloudie’s* #yokaitober as seen on my twitter on Halloween night! I considered giving each monster their own post but when I started getting a little too into playing with text compositions, cleaning them up, and even redesigning a couple of them I decided I should post the version I made for the challenge first before they all turn in to something completely different.

Here’s some brief descriptions of each monster. I’ll get into more detail when I make their separate posts.

Hasshaku-sama
An eight foot tall woman wearing a white sundress and straw hat with a strange laugh(?) that sounds like “PO PO PO PO”. She will relentlessly pursue anyone who sees her and kill them within a few days unless they undergo a certain protective ritual. And even after that they can never return to the place where they saw her.

Kuchisake Onna
She approaches her victims wearing a surgical mask and asks “Am I pretty?”. If the person answers yes she’ll then take the mask off to reveal a ghastly mouth that extends from ear to ear then ask “Even like this?” and kill them. If the person answers “no” she’ll kill them on the spot for being rude.

Toire no Hanako-san
A little ghost girl that can be summoned by knocking on the third stall of a girls bathroom and calling her name. She may answer back or she may drag you to Hell through the toilet. Either way it’s a good way to test one’s courage.

Aka Manto
A figure in a red cloak that appears public bathrooms and asks people if they want red paper or blue paper. If the victim answers red paper they will be lacerated all over until they’re colored red with their own blood. If they answer blue they will be suffocated until their face turns blue.

Teketeke
A legless ghost that cases people by running with her arms. Said to be the vengeful spirit of a girl who died on railroad tracks.

Kunekune
A white shape seen wriggling in the distance in rice fields. When one tries to take a closer look, they start laughing uncontrollably and are never the same again.

Jinmenken
A man-faced dog. That’s it basically.

Today’s #ayokaiaday (and bonus #yokaitober) is Toire no Hanako-san! The little ghost girl that can be summoned by calling out to her from the 3rd stall on the 3rd floor of an elementary school! What she does once summoned is up to the storyteller. Sometimes she just answers back and that’s it. Sometimes she’ll try to scare you or drag you into into hell through the toilet or some other nasty thing like that. But while she can be scary apparently the nice version is so common that in Japan she’s generally regarded as mostly harmless- even benevolent.

The two Hanakos in the bottom corner are the first new drawings in this thread. Up til now I’ve drawn her short and stubby like a Powerpuff girl or Dora the Explorer (Not my intention but there have been comparisons) but then I tried drawing her skinny like this and she might be better this way. (Especially since for some reason I found it easier to draw her in her more traditional jumper) If you agree or disagree feel free to leave some feedback!

The painting in the upper left corner is part of a painting I did for an illustration class many years ago. The painting was of yokai in a bathroom including an akaname licking the bathtub walls, a hyosube drinking from the toilet, and a kamikiri picking through the hair in a brush. My favorite comment I got from a classmate was that Hanako is the cutest character in the painting but she’s also the one doing the most damage. I hadn’t considered that when I made the painting but it’s so funny to me!

[Yesterday’s] (and bonus #yokaitober) is Tsukumogami! Specifically Chochin Obake the paper lanturn and Kasa Obake the paper umbrella. They’re both made of paper! That must be why they’re friends.

Here’s my rokurokubi for Yokaitober’s week 2 theme: prankster! One of many yokai that will lure you away just to give you a shock. Like my yureis, this was another thing I had on the back burner that I finished for the challenge. Aaaaalmost got it in at the last second but wound up getting it in a few minutes after.

[Yesterday’s] #ayokaiaday doubling for #YokaiTober is Zashiki Warashi! A house spirit that will bring you prosperity if it lives in your house but will bring you life destroying calamity if it ever leaves. It’s unclear as to whether or not the Zashiki Warashi has any control this power.

A collection of sketches. You might’ve already guessed I tried to make her look a bit like a kokeshi doll. The background is a piece of origami paper that I scanned and messed with in Photoshop. Kinda wished I went something less busy but all the origami paper I have are kinda busy.
