Glovegagged!

the gangster the cop the devil (GCD) is about a gangster (ma dong-seok) who teams up with a cop (kim moo-yeol) to catch a serial killer (kim sung-kyu).

ma dong-seok plays the typical mafia leader who runs a slew of rigged underground casinos that probably also embezzles money, and displays a lot of “action fare” in the movie (by which i mean him repeatedly punching people with lots of sound effects layered on after). kim moo-yeol is the typical impulsive and passionate cop with good intuitions, who deduces that a series of killings is performed by a serial killer before anyone else in the cheon-an force does. but this trope is so overdone in asian movies - it was as if kim moo-yeol had studied all such similar characters and put on a performative cloak for the film. it didn’t feel natural, neither did it feel like he was doing things even slightly differently (compared to song kang-ho in memories of murder). and i cannot even comment on kim sung-kyu, whose unique facial features would have made a very compelling villain performance (as kim jae-wook in voice, a korean drama). the serial killer character was so poorly developed; there would literally be no difference if they had replaced him with a CG-added shadow or a lamppost.

plot-wise,CGD is hardly reinventing the wheel or forging new ground here. the ending is predictable - the killer brings out the capacity for evil in the good guy, and the capacity for good in the bad guy, such that our 3 characters end up closer in moral standing than they were before. the good part of the film is that it is short (under 2h) and to the point. there is no indulgent lag as some of the more arthouse pieces tend to have, and action scenes are kept concise without being overwhelming. i also enjoyed the scores that pushes the movie from lighthearted to tense territory without feeling forced.

make no mistake - this is no serious action movie like the age of shadows, but rather resembles more your Lunar New Year-esque action flick that is coincidentally playing when you house-visit. you’re engrossed and you keep watching - but only because it’s there. – 5/10

Here’s the first trailer for the upcoming action thriller, Aimee (2022)

The film’s plot centers on an ex-soldier delving into the world of sex trafficking in order to save a missing girl. It’s directed by a longtime stuntman so we can expect some pretty solid action set pieces.

Red Rock West (1992)

Directed by John Dahl

Doomsy’s Rating: 83/100

Hilariously unhinged and beautifully shot, John Dahl’s Red Rock West is a dark and depraved Lynch-esque odyssey across Wyoming as drifter Michael (Nic Cage) assumes the persona of a hitman hired to a kill a man’s wife (Lara Flynn Boyle) in a small town. Complications arise, however when the real hitman (Dennis Hopper) turns up and all hell breaks loose. This is a fascinating blend of neo noir, erotic thriller, and action thriller and the manic insanity of Hopper makes it all the better. Cool soundtrack, too. Cage is surprisingly fairly restrained, likely due to the presence of a far nuttier lunatic on set. Perfect Friday night entertainment.
