*during some break at Hogwarts picnicking outside*

Percy: What do you think would be my animagus?

Penny: Something that represents you. Something that reflects your personality traits.

Percy:Yeah.

Penny: Also something with your signature red hair.

Percy:Mhm.

Penny: A woodpecker.

Percy: A woodpecker???

Penny:Yeah.

Percy:oh.

*Oliver joining them*

Oliver:Hello

Percy:Oh.

Penny:Exactly.

Percy:OH!

Oliver: What’s going on?

If you read even A Beginners Guide to Transfiguration, you will surely come across the story of Calopa Bolingbrooke. The classic tale of an Animagus gone wrong, Calopa attempted the hideously complex spell during her second year at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. It is unclear exactly what went wrong- rumor has it that she said anthoswhere she should have said athos-but she was quickly transferred to the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, where she had a long and successful career as a counselor to those unfortunate witches and wizards whose accidental magic wasn’t entirely reversible.

Of course, the textbooks don’t mention this- they leave you with a single shocking photo, and a dire warning. Calopa’s public story begins and ends with her sitting on that bench in a garden. No one thinks to ask who took the picture.

(Their wedding cake was lovely, according to all reports- beautifully floral).

Notice placed by the Department of Secrecy and Obfuscation in the Sorcery Standard, 13 August 2016

All Animagi and other form-shifting citizens of the AWC are reminded that their behavior when in animal form is expected to conform to biological norms in all public spaces, and on private property if there is reasonable risk of said behavior being overseen by Muggles. Transgressive behavior includes but is not limited to: human-style communication while in animal form (including writing by means of paw, tail, wingtip, fin, or hoof), the wearing of clothing by animals deemed “wild” and not “domestic”, and the construction of complex tools or other mechanisms. Transgressors may be charged with violation of the 1693 International Statute of Secrecy, the 1799 Act of Compliance, and the 1965 Decree for the Reasonable Expression of Alternate Physical Forms.

He couldn’t deny being a bit disappointed.

“I don’t see where you have any right to complain,” James said. He glanced over his shoulder and lowered his voice to a hoarse whisper. “Think about Peter.”

Sirius waved it off. “I just expected something with…more panache, you know? A panther. Maybe a falcon. Not a great bloody dog. There’s not much flair to that, is there?”

“I s’pose.” James twirled his quill between his fingers, looking off to the side, like he always did when he was lying. Sirius frowned and kicked James’ ankle. “Ow, c’mon, Black, I’m gonna need this leg later.”

“What do you mean, you suppose? Are you saying I seem like a loyal lap dog to you?”

“It’s not like you turned into a Pekingese.” James rolled his eyes. “I’m just saying…big, dark and shaggy? A little dangerous, but playful too? It doesn’t exactly notsound like you, does it?”

Sirius was quiet for a moment before his face split into a grin. “You think I’m dangerous yet playful, eh, Potter?”

“Merlin.” James buried his face in his hands. “I’m never hearing the end of this, am I?”
