Image Description.

Facebook post from Matt Norris.

Post reads like a conversation between 2 people:

Prison labor is a problem we need to address soon.

Convicts in prison should have to work like the rest of us.

You mean like slavery?

No, we’re giving them 3 meals and a bed, at our expense, while they just sit around and watch TV. They should have to work!

Right. Like slavery.

It’s not like slavery!

Can they leave?

No.

Can they refuse work?

No.

So how exactly isn’t this slavery?

We DO pay them!

Do we pay in accordance with labor laws?

No. We pay them between 33 cents and $1.41/hour with a maximum daily wage below $5, then take up to half of that as room&board fees and victim compensation.

Right. So like slavery.

BUT.

No.

Image then links to this url.

Below URL image reads “fun bonus fact: enough of our labor market currently relies on labor at these depressed rates, that it has a substantial downward pressure on both wages and job availability in low-skilled sectors. Immigrants aren’t taking your jobs. Slavery is.

End description.

I’d also like to add it’s not just private prisons. It’s also private detention centers where ICE keeps the immigrants.

The constitution even acknowledges that it’s still slavery

a hefty chunk of items with that ‘made in america’ sticker are in fact made by prison labor

at the very least anything that is a product of prison labor should be required to have a similar sticker to inform consumers they are taking part of this system, which is difficult to track because prison made manufactured goods include almost the entire uniform of a US soldier, road construction in most southern states, and agricultural goods sold in most stores

this…. looks familliar

Prison is just covert slavery and that’s why they wanna keep so many black people in there for the smallest offences.

This is insane

(Just to clarify, I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just giving you more information because you’re right, and I like your blog, and I want you to have sources in case you need them.)

It’s not even covert. It’s blatant and overt. It’s even called slavery in the constitution.

“Slavery is illegal except as punishment for a crime.”

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

People just don’t care because they think it’s all murderers and rapists, despite the fact that the number of violent criminals in jail is so small it might as well be negligible.

As of September 30, 2009 in federal prisons, 7.9% of sentenced prisoners were incarcerated for violent crimes,[39] while at year end 2008 of sentenced prisoners in state prisons, 52.4% had been jailed for violent crimes.[39] In 2002 (latest available data by type of offense), 21.6% of convicted inmates in jails were in prison for violent crimes. Among unconvicted inmates in jails in 2002, 34% had a violent offense as the most serious charge. 41% percent of convicted and unconvicted jail inmates in 2002 had a current or prior violent offense; 46% were nonviolent recidivists.[46]

It’s literally slavery, just dumbass racists and capitalists don’t care enough to figure out why we’re calling it that.

I did my thesis on eugenics and forced sterilization in Canadian history (indigenous specific) and the next cis woman to say that men should collectively be forced to get vasectomies for points on some kind imaginary scoreboard of rights is getting sent a copy of the records I had to sift thru of men, mostly indigenous, racialized, developmentally disabled, or poor men, being sterilized against their wills and often without their knowledge.

I once again must remind people that “don’t like abortion, get a vasectomy” isn’t the gotcha you think it is, and that reproductive justice means supporting people who are targeted by the state both for forced birth AND for sterilization and child apprehension, as they’re linked closely.

I know I’ve already reblogged this but I thought it was worth mentioning that medicine covering for racial violence is nothing new

Let’s not forget how black people who pursued civil rights were diagnosed as schizophrenic

Hmm I wonder why someone who has just been electrocuted and is being forcibly restrained would enter into a panic and frantically resist? Surely nothing about this situation would register to the brain as a serious danger to one’s safety and naturally trigger one’s instinctual fight or flight response? No it must be the fault of an obscure mental illness I’ve just invented.

[Image caption: bullet point from the Wikipedia page “List of disorders characterized as pseudoscience”, reading as follows.]

Excited delirium, originally identified by pathologist Charles Wetli to account for the deaths of nineteen Black prostitutes due to “sexual excitement” while under the influence of cocaine; the women later turned out to be victims of a serial killer.[26] The condition is primarily found in people under police restraint, especially after being Tasered,[27] and, while it is not in the ICD-10 or DSM-5, it is promoted by a number of doctors, many of whom are on the payroll of Axon, the manufacturer of Tasers.[27]

[Then the header of the Wikipedia page “Drapetomania”, as follows.]

Drapetomania was a supposed mental illness that, in 1851, American physician Samuel A. Cartwright hypothesized as the cause of enslaved Africans fleeing captivity.[1]: 41  Slave life was so pleasant, the official view was, that only the mentally ill would want to run away. In actuality, the desire for freedom is a natural human impulse.[2][3]

These 2 people were seen ripping down posters for MMIW Chelsea Poorman in BC, the man had been identified as Randy Vogel, a realtor for MacDonald realty in vancouver. the woman has not been identified. community members are asking for email and voice mail comments to be left on why Vogel feels the aesthetics of a utility pole are more important than raising awareness for mmip

i haven’t seen anything on my dash about it so

today is the anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre (Dec 29, 1890). The United States in cold blood murdered Lakota men, women, and children. Slaughtered them and have the nerve to call it a “battle” as if there was any fighting done in return.

Today native people still struggle against the effects of cultural and physical genocide. Our voices are often smothered by others but we are still strong. And we never forget.

The Truth About the Wounded Knee Massacre(IndianCountryToday)

Lakota accounts of the Massacre at Wounded Knee(PBS)

There are also many native people posting memorials and thoughts on Twitter.

The term derives from the extremely horrific and racist act of selling Native scalps, ‘skins’, to the United States government. Here is an actual advertisement from The Daily Republican newspaper in Sept. 24, 1863:

Look, non-Indigenous can run around claiming it is non-offensive and it is somewhat common to find Natives who aren’t particularly perturbed by this, mostly because in the hierarchy of needs, the NFL falls way under land rights, clean drinking water, food deserts, etc. I have family members who used to proudly wear ‘Red***n’ apparel, because they were excited it ‘had a Native’ on it. Any representation is better than none, to some people.

With that said, finding one Native who approves of something, who you can then trot out as a spokesperson, is a racist act in its own right. You are essentially telling us that our identity is singular and represented by your designated colonizer.

I don’t care if the term was supposedly created by a Native Person or deemed okay by an Indigenous person. That is like saying that Stella Kübler was the expert spokesperson for all things Jewish or that Ben Carson speaks for the entire Black American community. The term is extremely offensive. There should not even be an argument about this. Instead it should be an education. Indigenous people are not mascots or pets that people can selectively choose to highlight when it is beneficial or supports whatever myth they are trying to sell.

idk how to make people understand that pretending women can’t oppress men is not just a lie, it’s gaslighting. men of color, queer men, disabled men, etc. etc. are often targeted by a certain type of women- cishet white women specifically are agents of oppression. we know our experiences, these women and the girls they raise are as much (if not more, in some cases) likely to directly hurt us as their cishet white husbands, fathers, and sons.

i got assaulted in 2018 by a group of 3 girls, teenagers, simply for being an openly trans man. i ended up in the hospital with a broken nose, and people have downplayed my experiences every time i’ve told that story. they say i had no reason to fear for my life, that i’m an exception, that women just don’t have any power over me as a man.

i’ve questioned my memories, my sanity, because i keep getting told that this traumatic experience must have not been that bad. some people have accused me of making it up even! and i’m not the only one, many men have had similar if not the exact same experience as me.

that’s gaslighting. there’s no way to go around it, that’s what it is.

As an Indigenous two spirit man, almost all of the oppression I’ve experienced comes from white women. they are active participants in the colonization of my people, I have personally experienced vile racism and gaslighting from them. The first person to SA me as a child was a white girl. the second person to SA me as a child was a white girl. the third, fourth, fifth, and so on, were white girls. And now, when I’ve tried to share my story in support of other survivors, I’ve been shut down and told solely because I claimed to be male I am not allowed to share my story “it’s not okay for you a male to share your story on a post about a WOMAN who was abused by men” even though the original poster didn’t have a problem with my comments. I even offered support and shared that I was a survivor to a white female child, and her response? “men are stupid and I don’t respect them”. How horrendous that racist attack made me feel. I AM a man, the only people who support me are male family members and friends, and I was abused by white WOMEN. What kind of sick person would say that to a male SA survivor of female abusers? It was dehumanizing and traumatic. Another time, I was agreeing and supporting the notion that men need to be proactive in birth control and reproductive health, and I explained that in line with those beliefs, I, a man, got my nexplanon at 14 and now have my second nexplanon at 21. This white woman’s response? She says we should forcefully sterilize men. I was terrified. Here I was as an Indigenous man trying to set an example for other men that we need to be active when it comes to our own reproductive health, and she was saying she wants to forcefully sterilize us, for the sole reason that we identify as men. My people, Indigenous people as a whole, have a long and ongoing history of forced sterilization. The US and Canada are STILL forcefully sterilizing our people. White women can absolutely oppress Indigenous two spirit men based on my own experiences. It is extremely traumatic and distressing. How am I supposed to trust women when the very first few years of my life were filled with SA at the hands of white girls and a white woman pedophile? How am I supposed to trust women when the most traumatic racism I’ve faced was at their hands? How am I supposed to support white women when they are threatening physical violence and medical rape on my people? I have never oppressed these people. Me being male does not erase my womanness and two spirit ness either. Me being male does not cause me to be oppressive, that is racist bioessentialist rhetoric. These white women made a conscious decision to assault me, be racist to me, and threaten medical rape on me and my people. I would never do any such thing, yet I’m the oppressor because I partially identify as male in my cultures.

Users honeyb33jenni, @buyo-art, and @ratsinatub have a history of virulently racist content. Many are taking personal gratification from inexcusable depictions of PoC. The fetishisation and dehumanisation of said PoC is rampant, thoroughly enjoyed and encouraged by this collection of individuals at large, and is mostly concentrated in @adira-tyree’s fanfiction server. They have not been called out in any manner, and are actively encouraged by several other members, such as @istalkpeople and @fatherkirbussy.

This virulent racism extends to their fanfiction, where “tribals” are characterized as “stupid” and “horny” for their own sexual gratification. This is not ignorance, they have acknowledge that their “tribal” influence is directly referential to Indigenous American communities.

As a fandom our space should be safe for everybody. Bethesda’s failure to check their own content does not extend to us. Further evidence can be found in the album below— e.g: failures to consider handling Mormonism, a literal cult, with respect.
