Art Tips | Line Weight

Hello, I didn’t make it in time but I still wanted to share this short guide on applying varying line weight onto a drawing.

In my first year of art college, drawing class was like a treasure trove of new tips and knowledge which I looked forward to every week. I used to only draw either very lightly overall or with the same intensity and no variation in my lines.

But one of the first things introduced to us in drawing class was how to vary our lines and mark making to capture light and shadow through just our line drawings. I never noticed the big difference it made to drawing only in a line with the same weight or which was uniform in pressure. I saw how it added more depth and fluidity to the character or subject making them less flat and stiff overall.

So ever since then I have tried to observe more and make thoughtful decisions of where I can play with the pressure of my lines while drawing.

Hope this is helpful! :)

I know you’ve shown how you draw faces from different angles very briefly before, but I was wondering if you’d ever go more in depth? For example, I always struggle with drawing the eyes at a ¾ angle…

Ok, I get this question so many times that I decided to do something about it. I’ve already made a tutorial about drawing eyes and tbh it should help with drawing eyes from any angle, the tricky part is to understand the human face, its anatomy. If you see the face/head as a three dimentional object you’ll be able to draw it, I can’t say it enough, 3D thinking is important. Also, references are important, drawing from life is important because then you have a 3D model of the head right in a front of you. All you need to do is observe and understand.

Drawing Body Proportions

BecauseI didn’t actually answer anon’s question last time, here are some cheat sheets on how I approach body proportions when I draw.

Typical adult body proportion is eight (8) “heads” (but I think anywhere from 7 to 8 is okay). Below chart notes where each “head” ends in terms of body part:

Another proportion method is 1/3 from top of head to natural waist (just above bellybutton), 1/3 from there to top of knees, and last 1/3 to heel of foot:

The “balls” are joints (shoulder, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles) as well as the stomach as a central “joint” for the torso:

Remember that perspective also impacts your drawing! Eg. The figure here has one foot slightly behind the other so her heels don’t line up to the bottom guideline.

In my unprofessional and untrained opinion, these are not hard rules, just guidelines as you develop your own style and eye for anatomy (but it’s helpful to know what the rules are before you get too cute in “breaking” them).

✨ Happy drawing! ✨

ae-llish: Eh, just a lil’ something. “ Where we’re going we don’t need proper proportions “

Here is a brief thing I did.

I normally never used the default buttons on the pen and usually disable them.  After using a cintiq companion with limited button mapping and no keyboard i realized i had no proper way to adjust my pen size.

I changed the buttons on the pen to increase and decrease pen size.

Not sure if anyone else does this but I think its a good tip.

The Serpent & The Rays

I painted this as a demo for students at a Zoom event recently and since I get a lot of questions about how I paint shallow water, here’s a step by step! It’s honestly a really fun subject to paint and pretty accessible even for people who are newer to painting environments.

If you like this type of content, I have an artbook on Kickstarter right now with tutorials just like this!

Been a while since I made one of these, but here’s a quick thing about glow. Counterintuitively, you don’t have to make the image super bright to convey that something is glowing.

Sharing my art?

Hello all! I’d like to showcase some of my art but I’m not sure of the best way to do it. I’ve been on Deviantart for about a decade but the only thing that gets noticed is bad fan art I did when I was like 13 .

Does anyone have suggestions? Would you all be interested in seeing my art? I primarily do celebrity portraits and original characters.

I post speed draws on TikTok and have a couple (literally 2) longer versions on Youtube but I don’t know where to post still images.

I technically have all the main social medias but they’re all undeveloped and I’m not sure which to pursue. A separate art blog? Instagram? Twitter? Which would you all be most likely to view, if any?
