✨So excited to share with you all the official launch of @houseofalegria ✨This project began as an idea i had in 2016 to support the next generation of emerging migrant creatives. We at House of Alegría believe that migrant and Queer/Trans/Non-Binary creatives deserve space to imagine, deserve time to rest, deserve to be in a nurturing ecosystem that feels regenerative and collaborative. We trust in the power of artists and storytellers, and their self-determination and autonomy. We wish to cultivate the shared knowledge of our cultural workers and move towards a world where migrant and Queer/Trans/Non-Binary artists are supported in their craft, growth, creativity, and imagination. And we do this through an Artist in Residence Program, in house publishing press, community workshops, and consultations. Our 2022 Inaugural Artist in Residence is @alexa_lapintora .

House of Alegría is named after my paternal grandmother, Alegría Guiñansaca. An Indigenous Kichwa woman born in Cumbe, Ecuador.*Alegría is a Spanish word which translates to “joy” in English. In her honor, and in the same sentiment this multi-fold project is intended for migrant artists who are looking for a “home” that honors, respects, and celebrates their artistry and well-being. Welcome 2020-2021 New Wave Artists-in-Residence!
Estelle Maisonett (@elle915) is a Mexican Puerto Rican mixed-media artist born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Her work is an investigation of how personal relationships to objects and materials inform preconceived notions of identity, economic status, accessibility, race, sexual orientation, and gender. Estelle’s residency starts tomorrow, and ends January 2021. Wishing her luck!
Joiri Minaya (@joiriminaya, b. 1990) is a Dominican-United Statesian multi-disciplinary visual artist based in New York, whose works destabilize historic and contemporary representations of an imagined tropical identity. Joiri will be in residence early Spring 2021.
Estelle and Joiri will both have virtual studio visits as a part of the NEW WAVE VIP program, proceeds from which directly benefit the New Wave Artist-in-Residence Program; DM @newwaveartwknd or visit the website to make a donation and secure your spot before the 2020 program begins next weekend!
