Today I am so sad and disappointed and angry. This country has more work to do than I ever imagined, so moving forward we need to show up for each other like never before. I’ve seen this quote by Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos floating around a few times today and thought it was very appropriate.

Duplicitous personalities have always fascinated me. I am simultaneously indignant and impressed when I see someone pull it off. To a certain extent, everyone does it. Its a form of defense or adaptation to change.

On the note change, I feel like a different person looking back on this year. Coincidentally, a friend told me this is a common depiction is Janus, the Roman god of passage. One face looks to the future and the other to the past. The month of January is named after him.

Happy New Year!

cw: abuse, mental illness, suicide

A topic that the graphic memoir “In Limbo” will touch upon, but not as much in depth. I get into these rabbit holes about CPS and these near-death experiences once every three years and it always keeps me awake at night.
Trust me, I don’t hate my mom. We get along fine now, even though it’s a stiff and professional relationship. But I think if she at least got the therapy and/or counseling she needed years ago, she (and I) would have been so much happier. Or maybe we wouldn’t and I would’ve gone into foster care—also unknown territory. That could be equally as traumatic, or better. Just… different.
By the way, CPS isn’t any better to black or Hispanic folks—they’re statistically more likely to be taken away from their families. A different problem that’s just as awful. Found that in an academic paper somewhere, which is like, one of 2 sources that talks about this problem (second one being a reddit thread). Probably will print and mail this to the CPS in my home state this week (kudos to my therapist for the suggestion)
