The hunter’s moon, also known as the sanguine moon, is the first full moon following the harvest moon (the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox). Here the moonlight illuminates ice crystals in the upper atmosphere to give a rainbow halo effect around the moon. This is called a lunar corona

In Ancient Greece, this time of year would be marked by the festival to Demeter and Persephone called Thesmophoria which was celebrated to promote fertility and agricultural bounty. The festival was only celebrated by married free women and it was said to last for three days.

Today marks the last day of Virgo season as well as the autumnal equinox. Did you know that in western astrology the twelve zodiac signs are based on figures from classical mythology? Virgo is represented by the goddess Astraea.

Astraea is the daughter of Eos and Astraeus. She is best known for being the last of the gods to live among the mortals. To honor her dedication to mankind, Zeus set her image amongst the stars so that she may always watch over them.
